Chicago Cubs Lineup: Surely, You Won’t Be Swept by the Rockies, Right? ...Middle East

CUBS LINEUP — Imagine how embarrassing it would be to get swept by the Rockies after dropping two of three to the Giants while moving a game below .500 on the year. That’s what’s on the line today.

And the only thing that might actually make it worse? Edward Cabrera, one of the Cubs’ big offseason additions, is on the mound following a disastrous first game back from the IL. If he gets blown up again — and, hey, it is Coors Field, so that could happen — we are going to be down baaaaaaaad.

Can’t wait.

Chicago Cubs Lineup:

Pete Crow-Armstrong, CF Alex Bregman, 2B Michael Busch, 1B Ian Happ, LF Seiya Suzuki, RF Nico Hoerner, 2B Moises Ballesteros, DH Carson Kelly, C Dansby Swanson, SS

The Cubs lineup for this afternoon’s finale at Coors is basically the same group of players we see most days, just in a different order. Alex Bregman is back up to batting second, Busch and Happ are third and fourth, and even Ballesteros is in there at DH, moving from second yesterday to seventh today.

Carson Kelly is catching this one, and Dansby Swanson turns it over.

No Matt Shaw. No Pedro Ramirez. The latter isn’t surprising, but I did expect Shaw to get in there today. Somehow.

Rockies Lineup:

Edouard Julien, 2B Willi Castro, 3B TJ Rumfield, 1B Hunter Goodman, DH Troy Johnston, RF Cole Carrigg, CF Sterlin Thompson, LF Ezequiel Tovar, SS Brett Sullivan, C

Pitching Matchup:

Chicago Cubs: Edward Cabrera, RHP

A few weeks ago, Edward Cabrera hit the IL with a blister, came back after the minimum stay, and was promptly blown up by a not-good San Francisco Giants team at Wrigley Field: 3.2 IP, 8H, 8ER, 1BB, 6K.

He allowed three homers in that game, which is, unfortunately, not a new trend: 11 HRs allowed in his last 11 starts. Fits right in with Jameson Taillon and Shota Imanaga. And Colin Rea. And the entire Cubs team, as it turns out:

HRs Allowed Leaderboard:Jameson Taillon: 20 (1st most)Shota Imanaga: 17 (t-2nd most)Edward Cabrera, Colin Rea: 11 (t-27th most)Teams: Cubs: 99 HRs (1st most)

Unlike Shota Imanaga, Jameson Taillon, and Matthew Boyd, however, Edward Cabrera will be back with the Cubs next year (and the year after). So I am still very much rooting for him to figure out whatever’s been spoiling his production, because the talent, whether you want to believe it or not, is legitimately off the charts. The Cubs need more pitchers like Cabrera, modern pitchers, and they need to figure out how to help them, too.

Pitching at Coors Field isn’t a great place for that process to start, but it’s his turn to throw. So good luck.

Colorado Rockies: Ryan Feltner, RHP

For his career, Ryan Feltner has been a split-neutral guy, though he had traditional splits last season and reverse splits this season. So … your guess is as good as mine if there’s any platoon advantage to be had today.

Moreover, while his 4.22 ERA nd 4.73 FIP aren’t particularly impressive, you should note that he just turned in back-to-back really solid performances against the Giants and Brewers at Coors (combined): 12.0 IP, 5H, 1ER, 2BB, 6K.

Obviously, the lack of strikeouts means a lot of balls in play, but he is, at times, good at generating groundballs and weak contact. Moreover, this Cubs lineup couldn’t even hit a pitcher with an 8.01 ERA last night. So … not sure what I expect today. Oh, and the wind is blowing in.
