Alonso admits heading into ‘probably my last F1 race at Barcelona’ ...Middle East

Sport by : (F1 News) -

Fernando Alonso is preparing for what could be a deeply symbolic chapter in his remarkable career, admitting that this weekend's race at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will "probably" be his last Formula 1 appearance at the venue.

With the venue set to rotate off the calendar from next season as part of the sport’s arrangement with Spa-Francorchamps, the circuit is not scheduled to host another Grand Prix until 2028.

By then, whether Alonso is still racing in Formula 1 remains one of the sport's biggest unanswered questions, but the odds seem quite low.

For now, the Spaniard is embracing the possibility that a circuit so closely intertwined with his career could be preparing to bid him farewell.

“It’s going to be a special weekend, probably my last Barcelona race in Formula 1,” Alonso said.

“I want to say thanks to everyone [supporting him]. I will try to enjoy the weekend. I will not be competitive and I will not be too long in the car in qualifying. In the race, hopefully yes, but not at the pace we all want.

“I want everyone to still enjoy the weekend. It has always been a celebration when we come to Barcelona. I think this is my 23rd Spanish Grand Prix and all of them, they’ve been magical. This last has to be magical as well.”

A future yet to be decided

Alonso's contract with Aston Martin expires at the end of the current season, and despite previously expressing a desire to continue racing, he remains undecided about what comes next.

Rather than rushing a decision, the 44-year-old plans to take stock of his future after the summer break.

"I don’t really have anything in mind. After the summer I will take the decision whether to continue or not,” Alonso continued.

That uncertainty makes Barcelona feel even more significant.

Not only is the race disappearing from next year's calendar, but Alonso himself acknowledges that every grand prix this season carries the possibility of being a final visit.

“Barcelona is obviously not happening next year and if I don’t know what I will do next year, it’s nearly impossible to be sure what I will do in two years’ time.

“I consider that every race I go to this year that potentially it could be my last time in Australia, my last time in China, my last time in Monaco, and here in Barcelona, there is a little bit more of that chance as it is not happening next year as well.”

Those words create an intriguing backdrop for the months ahead. Formula 1's most experienced driver is still weighing his options, while the sport waits to learn whether one of its defining figures has another chapter left to write.

At peace with whatever comes next

What stands out most is Alonso's calmness. While speculation over his future continues to swirl, he insists the emotional challenge is not the prospect of retirement. Instead, the frustration comes from Aston Martin's inability to compete where he believes it should.

“For me, the hardest thing is not to win races and be competitive,” he said. “If it’s the last, or not the last, it’s not affecting too much.

“I’m at peace with my career and my life and if anything comes now, [it’s] welcome. If it doesn’t come, it doesn’t change my feeling. I achieved a lot more than I ever dreamt when I was a kid.

“When I was racing in Spain I never dreamt to be a Formula 1 driver, then to race for the best teams in the paddock and stay for a very long time. Everything is a plus and it is a plus now.

“We’re not as competitive as we want to be now and that is probably the biggest pain that we go through every weekend. In terms of personal feeling, it’s not too hard.”

Whether Alonso ultimately chooses to continue beyond 2026 or decides the time has come to step away, Barcelona promises to be an emotional stop on that journey.

The future remains unwritten. But if this truly is Alonso's final Formula 1 appearance at the circuit that has hosted so many of his homecoming moments, the Spaniard will hope to leave behind one last magical memory before the lights go out.
