After a week of various competition rounds, ranging from showing off talents to more formal interviews, the pool narrowed down to just five. At the end of the night, when the awards were unveiled, Ruby Tilghman was crowned Miss Alabama.
Tilghman competed in Saturday’s final round of competition as Miss Birmingham and will move on to the Miss America competition as a representative for Alabama. Previously, the role of Miss Alabama was held by Emma Terry, who presented Tilghman with the crown Saturday night.
Tilghman, a native of Panama City, Florida, graduated from the University in May 2026. She plans to continue her education at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Heersink School of Medicine following her time as Miss Alabama.
While at the University, Tilghman majored in chemistry with a minor in social innovation and leadership. She was an active member of the Robert E. Witt University Fellows program, the XXXI and Alpha Gamma Delta and served as a research assistant in the lab of Ryan Summer, specializing in bacteria and cell research.
Prior to being crowned Miss Birmingham and now Miss Alabama, she was crowned Miss University of Alabama in 2025 and placed second runner-up in the 2025 Miss Alabama competition. In her new role as Miss Alabama, Tilghman will make public appearances and participate in widespread community service across the state.
Tilghman’s community service initiative, 57 Miles: Answering the Needs of Your Community, connects the University Fellows program and the University’s Honors College to the community of Marion, Alabama. Since the revamped program launched in 2025, around 75 University students have contributed over 2,500 service hours to Marion.
For the talent portion of the competition, Tilghman sang “I Dreamed a Dream” from the musical “Les Misérables.” She won the evening gown preliminary on Wednesday and the talent preliminary on Friday.
Current University students Julia Schumacher, competing as Miss Tuscaloosa, and Elaina Burt, competing as Miss Jefferson County, also placed in the top five Saturday night, winning first and third runners-up, respectively.
The Miss Alabama pageant and the Miss America Organization are scholarship competitions designed “to help educate the young women in Alabama by providing scholarships for their college education.”
Tilghman will compete at Miss America in West Palm Beach, Florida, from Aug. 28 to Sept. 6 later this year.
