This year, local Juneteenth events honoring Black culture, history, and community are set to take place across various weekends. Here’s how Orange County’s governments are celebrating.

Orange County

On Friday June 12, Orange County will host a full day of cultural events, performances, food, and community connections in Hillsborough. All are free and open to the public, and those planning to attend are encouraged to register here.

From 10-11:30 a.m., an opening ceremony at the David Price Farmers Market Pavillion is set to include a keynote by Dr. Sonny Kelly, performance by The Magic of African Rhythm, and spoken word by Nick Courmon. Seating, shade, and ASL interpretation are provided. 

A block party at Eno Arts Mill will take place from 6-9 p.m. will include a live Dj, spoken word, community games, food trucks, a community market, and a drum celebration with The Magic of African Rhythm. Attendees should bring folding chairs and games. Restrooms and water stations will be available onsite. The first 150 people will receive a free meal ticket.

Mebane

On Saturday June 13, Mebane’s celebrations will take place from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Mebane Community Park. The day includes a lineup of vendors, speakers, and special guests — with those announcements coming soon, according to the city’s event page. Attendees will also be able to enjoy backyard games like giant jenga, corn hole, spike ball, and more.

Chapel Hill and Carrboro

On Friday June 19, Chapel Hill and Carrboro are set to jointly celebrate Juneteenth from 4-8 p.m. The annual gathering will take place at Hargraves Community Center and include live performances, history exhibits, and a market with art vendors and nonprofits. The event will also feature local food, music, dancing, and activities for kids.

Carrboro Mayor Barbara Foushee and Chapel Hill Mayor Pro Tem Camille Berry will open the festivities. The performance lineup includes Carrboro Poet Laureate Amanda Bennett, Chapel Hill Poet Laureate Donovan Livingston, Tre. Charles, Kay Marion and the Neo-Symphony, line dancing, and more.
