The Chicago Bears are among the NFL teams that are just about set to get things started with mandatory minicamps. While we have some time, let’s take a look at some league news.
NFL’s Desire for a New Bears Stadium
We’ve spilled a lot of virtual ink writing about the Bears’ stadium saga through a local and regional lens. I’m sharing this clip from 104.3 The Score, featuring longtime NFL writer and reporter Dan Pompei, who offers perspective on what the league might be thinking.
Check it out:
.@danpompei: "The league, I am certain, would prefer Arlington Heights. And the Bears prefer Arlington Heights. It's the best place for them if they have the right partner, the right partnership in the state and (local bodies)." pic.twitter.com/MORCIxaAqb
— 104.3 The Score (@thescorechicago) June 8, 2026I hadn’t thought much about what the league wants out of a Bears stadium. Moreover, I certainly hadn’t been thinking about whether the league would try to strong-arm the Bears into making a certain decision. But I am now.
The property in Arlington Heights is closer to O’Hare and has room to build hotels and housing, which makes it an appealing site for a possible Super Bowl. This league loves rewarding Super Bowls to teams that get stadium deals done. It’s almost as if these stadium projects are less about erecting new structures and more about real estate development.
This isn’t to say that Hammond can’t cook something up in Northwest Indiana. But until the Indiana site is officially selected, I don’t have a comparison point.
Keep an Eye on Baker Mayfield’s Contract Situation
Baker Mayfield is entering the final year of his deal. So when the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback sounds off about contract negotiations, it would behoove us all to listen:
“Contract stuff is happening, starting, talks and whatnot, not anywhere close to what we were thinking. Would love to be here long-term, and as of right now, that’s not exactly the case. I’m under contract for 2026. The guys in that locker room, the staff know that I’m still going to be me, still going to do everything I can to help this team win a Super Bowl. To me, that’s the priority. Everything else will take care of itself.”
…
“Obviously, yes, I’d love to have a long-term deal done, but they know my deadline. As soon as training camp starts, we’re not doing any contract stuff. It’s all ball. It’s not up to me when that gets done by. Hopefully before that. If not, we’ll still have a good year.”
Trying to peg a projected contract value for Mayfield isn’t easy. However, the projected Franchise Tag number for quarterbacks in 2027 is $51 million. Would that number keep the Bucs from extending the tag? That’s a huge number. One that I’m sure NFL teams will be monitoring with great interest.

While June 1 delivered the blockbuster trades of pass rusher Myles Garrett and wide receiver A.J. Brown in deals to the Rams and Eagles, respectively, it made me wish more player swaps followed. We might be waiting a while until we see our next big NFL trade. But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t inform ourselves about who could be available.
ESPN’s Dan Graziano rattles off a list of 10 players whose names are expected to be dropped in trade rumors between now and the NFL trade deadline. And if the Bears are in the hunt, perhaps they will be interested in one of these edge defenders who are name-checked in the piece:
Maxx Crosby, Las Vegas Raiders Josh Sweat, Arizona Cardinals Kayvon Thibodeaux, New York GiantsBears GM Ryan Poles told reporters earlier in the offseason that the team inquired about a Crosby trade. Nothing came of it, but it is still notable that Poles willingly offered that up instead of countering with a “no comment” or a vague statement. The Cardinals are reportedly taking phone calls on Sweat, who the Bears were reportedly interested in signing during the 2025 NFL offseason. As for Thibodeaux, he intrigues me as a possible Bears fit (if the price is right). However, there have been no substantial reports connecting the dots on a potential trade.
The NFL hasn’t posted a trade deadline date for the 2026 season. We’ll update that whenever that drops.
Extra Points
Kyle Brandt cuts a nearly 4-minute promo on the Bears’ stadium situation:I took the weekend to cool down from the Bears news. It didn’t work. pic.twitter.com/DQ3kqNld9e
— Kyle Brandt (@KyleBrandt) June 8, 2026 Reunion time in Kansas City! L’Jarius Sneed is reportedly signing a one-year deal worth up to $5 million to return to the Chiefs. Sneed was a Chiefs fourth-round pick in 2020 and was on two of the team’s Super Bowl titles during the Patrick Mahomes era. In 2024, the Chiefs sent Sneed to the Tennessee Titans. But after two seasons in Nashville, Sneed was let go and allowed to hit the market. The NFL moves quickly, friends. Despite an ongoing contract dispute, Jacoby Brissett is set to report to the Arizona Cardinals’ facilities for the team’s mandatory minicamp. The Cardinals QB has been a no-show during the voluntary portion of OTAs while angling for a restructured contract with a pay raise more in line with a starter in the league. Rookie Carson Beck has been getting a lion’s share of the workload to this point in the offseason. Maybe dynasty fantasy football players should keep that name in mind if they are looking for a quarterback flier. The following players on teams set to square off against the Bears are on this CBS Sports list of under-the-radar breakout candidates: Jaguars WR Brian Thomas Jr., Patriots WR Kyle Williams, Bills EDGE T.J. Parker, Dolphins WR Malik Washington, and Jets TE Mason Taylor. Parker is a rookie who I thought could have been a good fit for Chicago with pick No. 25 in the 2026 NFL Draft. After being ruled ineligible by the NCAA after it discovered he had wagered approximately $90,000 on professional and college sports over four years, Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby was granted a temporary injunction by Texas Judge Ken Curry that could pave the way for him to play college football for the Red Raiders this season. I am afraid this ruling is going to set a dangerous precedent:“This Court finds that (Sorsby) has demonstrated that he will suffer a probable, imminent, and irreparable injury if this Court does not issue this temporary injunction because he will be unable to participate as a member of Texas Tech University’s 2026 Football season … ”[image or embed]
