25-Year-Old TV Show That Used Real, Operational World War II Weapons Ranks as One of the Best TV Shows of All Time ...Saudi Arabia

News by : (Parade) -

IMDb ranks it as the fourth best show out of 250 masterpieces throughout the years. It’s just behind Planet Earth, Planet Earth II, and Breaking Bad, and it went on to transform into a bigger universe, with The Pacific and the more recent Masters of the Air to tell true stories of those who fought during World War II.

This series had a budget of $12 million per episode just to create. The marketing budget added an extra $15 million or so, and HBO wasn’t too certain about it at first. It was only due to Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks being involved that swayed them in the right direction. Hanks said in a 2002 interview that “they did bat an eye. But the reality is this was expensive. You had to have deep pockets. And HBO has deep pockets."

Part of the reason the budget was so high was because the series didn’t use CGI or props. Instead, it opted for real, fully operational equipment and weapons from World War II to create a more true experience. The actors were also put through 10 days of military bootcamp training to understand the exhaustion and feelings the men would have gone through at the time.

To help with the marketing, HBO worked with Jeep to create promotional material, since the classic military model of the vehicle appeared in the TV series throughout each episode. Six commercials were created in total, with some filmed at Normandy Beach in France, and it allowed HBO to land advertising slots on regular TV to boost interest in the series.

The series still experienced controversy, albeit short-lived. Band of Brothers was designed to only follow one American troop through the course of the war, and The Daily Mail issued a complaint that the British soldiers were overlooked. Spielberg's interview with The Guardian helped to ease the complaints, and now the series is beloved as a telling of real people during World War II.
