Multiple burglaries were reported within days and miles of each other as Chicago police warned residents of how the suspect is getting inside homes — and what’s been taken so far.
According to police, the incidents all happened in the Dunning and Portage Park neighborhoods, with four reported within a six-day span.
“In these incidents, the offender makes or attempts to make unlawful entry into a residence through an unsecured door or window,” police said in their alert. “Once inside, the offender takes property belonging to the homeowner including small safes, firearms, jewelry, sunglasses, documents and cash.
The locations include:
• 5900 block of West Waveland Ave between June 1, 2026 at 12:30 pm and June 5, 2026 at 11:30 pm (Portage Park)
• 6000 block of West Waveland Ave on June 3, 2026 at 12:10 am (Dunning)
• 6000 block of West Warwick Ave on June 4, 2026 at 03:10 am (Dunning)
• 6000 block of West Waveland Ave on June 6, 2026 at 04:57 am (Dunning)
The suspect, who has been seen wearing a black balaclava-style mask, is believed to be between 18 and 20 years old, standing between 5 feet, 6 inches and 5 feet, 8 inches tall.
Police said he has been seen wearing grey sweatpants or ripped jeans, sometimes with a black backpack.
While police are still searching for a suspect, they offered the following advice for residents:
• Be aware of this crime and alert family / friends / co-workers who live in or frequent the area
• Pay attention to suspicious individuals loitering in the area
• Immediately report suspicious activity.
• If you are confronted by an assailant, remain calm.
• Remember any unique physical characteristics (scars, limp, acne, teeth, etc.).
• Never pursue a fleeing assailant; provide the information to the police.
• If approached by a witness to the incident, request their contact information
• If video surveillance equipment is present, please save a copy of the incident for investigating detectives
• Secure all doors and windows to your residence
