Kenny Loggins was asked by producer Jon Peters to write a song for the feature film Caddyshack. The two formed a professional relationship when Loggins worked with Peters on the 1976 Barbra Streisand, Kris Kristofferson film A Star is Born.

“The opening scene of the movie was Danny (played by future Academy Award nominee Michael O'Keefe), the lead character, riding his bicycle through a suburb,” Loggins explained. “It looks really banal, but the music that they put behind it was ‘Gotta Serve Somebody’ by Bob Dylan."

He continued, "From that, I got the idea they wanted to portray [Danny] as a bit of a rebel, even though he had not yet achieved that particular character. I figured I wanted to write something that expressed that rebellious nature the way the director had tried to express it in his rough cut."

The resulting song delivered a sneaky jab to listeners amid the tune's infectious singalong melody. Loggins' message was clear: "Listen to your heart," despite what others may think.

"That becomes the theme that runs through the movie. Who the [expletive] are you, and what do you believe? You take this silly comedy, and you lift it a notch. [Danny's] redeeming quality is that, sooner or later, he gets in touch with who he is.”

"I'm Alright" also became the unofficial theme song of the sports comedy's other, non-human star, the gopher. Loggins told Sports Illustrated that Peters shared his idea of the now-iconic furry film creature that "comes up out of a golf hole and dances [to the song].”
