For many, swimming in college is a lifelong dream that is pursued with dedication and determination. Fitter and Faster is proud to honor these athletes and those who supported them on their journey.
Oregon high school state champion Tessa Aberle has announced her verbal commitment to swim and study at Washington State University beginning in the fall of 2027. She publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I am beyond excited to announce that I will be continuing my academic and athletic career at Washington State University!! I’m incredibly grateful to my family and friends who have supported me along the way; I wouldn’t be here without you all. I would also like to give a big thank you to all my coaches throughout the years, especially Coach Emily, who has played a huge role in helping me become the athlete and person I am today. Finally, thank you to Coach Russ and all of the WSU staff for believing in me and for giving me this opportunity. GO COUGS!!
A rising senior at Clackamas High School, Aberle has competed for the school’s swimming and diving team since her freshman year. She also currently trains year-round with Lake Oswego Swim Club, where she primarily specializes in sprint freestyle and butterfly.
Over the past 12 months, Aberle has cut about five seconds in the 200 IM, four seconds in the 200 free, two seconds in the 100 free and 100 back, and a second in the 50 free. She clocked all of her best times across various club meets from December to March, including the Tualatin Hills Holiday Classic, the PN VAST 49th Annual Washington Open in January, and the PN BC Premier Invitational in March, where she ended the season with bests of 23.88, 51.63, and 1:51.78 in freestyle, 56.45 in the 100 back, and 2:05.02 in the 200 IM.
Beyond club meets, Aberle has been a staple for Clackamas at the Oregon School Activities Associatio (OSAA) 6A State Championships each season of her career thus far. In February, she picked up her first-ever state title when she won the 200 free (1:52.12) and finished third in the 100 free (51.78). She also helped her high school finish 12th in the 200 medley relay; she led the team off with a 27.56 backstroke split.
Top SCY Times:
50 Freestyle: 23.88 100 Freestyle: 51.63 200 Freestyle: 1:51.78 100 Backstroke: 56.45 200 IM: 2:05.02A Division I Mid-Major program, Washington State competes in the Mountain West Conference, with the women’s team placing second out of 11 teams at this past season’s conference championships. Aberle’s current lifetime best in the 100 back would have made the ‘C’ final, and she is not far off the 23.36/50.98/1:51.49 in the 50/100/200 free and 2:04.42 in the 200 IM needed to do the same, and that’s with two full seasons of training to go before she swims at her first conference meet.
Aberle joins Ayla Vodak and Rebecca Welch in committing to the Cougars’ class of 2031 so far.
