WEBSTER, N.Y. — The Webster community is divided over whether the LGBTQ flag should fly over Town Hall.

People came out to a town board meeting Thursday night to talk about the town’s first-ever Pride flag raising. News10NBC’s Tom Kowalski was there, and not everyone in the room was for it.
The flag has caused controversy in the town. Those for it say it’s an important symbol for the LGBT community during Pride month, while those against it say it’s important for the town to not show favorites to certain communities any time of year.
“We’re going backward in society when we think that. And I have to say, it’s what I said in there earlier, it’s 2026. Where we still fighting about this? Why are we fighting about including people who are born the way they’re born? Love is love,” said Sue Garbin, who lives in Webster.
Garbin, along with many others, came out in support of the flag.
“My mother was gay and my mother couldn’t live her authentic life. So I you know, I think I somewhat do this for her to to a certain extent, it’s just we’re not hurting anybody,” Garbin said.
But lifelong resident Laurie Read says flags flown on town property shouldn’t show special favor to any groups.
“I am not for it. It has nothing to do with the sexuality. It has to do with showing favoritism. There’s only three flags that should be flown. The U.S. flag, state flag and our town flag,” Read said.
“It wasn’t approved for the through the town board, which is code to do policy. So the supervisor did that on his own and shouldn’t have,” Read said.
What town officials say
A town spokesperson told News10NBC that’s not accurate. Later that night, in a 3-2 vote, the town board passed a resolution to only show certain flags on town property.
“The American flag and the New York State flag shall be the official flags of the town of Webster, to be displayed on properties owned by the Town of Webster. Said flag policy shall take effect on Friday, June 5th,” said Webster Town Councilman John Cahill, who made the motion.
Town Supervisor Alex Scialdone and Deputy Supervisor Nick Hunter voted against the resolution. Scialdone said in a statement that he supports flying the LGBT flag.
Statement from Scialdone
“It is an honor to mark the beginning of Pride month with the raising of the pride flag at Webster Town Hall. Representation of all members of our Town makes our Webster community a kinder, stronger, and better community today and for years to come. As Supervisor, I’ll continue to advocate for measures to unite, rather than divided, Webster.”
The flag is set to be removed at 9 a.m. on Friday.
