Report: Dylan Larkin Asks Red Wings For A Trade (Potential Blackhawks Fit?) ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

An absolute bombshell report on Thursday afternoon before Game 3 of the Stanley Cup Final from Elliotte Friedman for Sportsnet: Detroit Red Wings captain Dylan Larkin has requested a trade.

Larkin, who will turn 30 on July 30, has appeared in 808 regular season games since the Red Wings selected him 15th overall in the 2014 NHL Draft. He has scored 276 goals with 367 assists and won 52.8 percent of his faceoffs over 11 seasons — all with Detroit.

The reason for the request, according to Friedman, is the other side of his stat sheet. Larkin has appeared in five total career NHL playoff games, and none since 2016.

Larkin has five years remaining on a contract that carries an $8.7M cap hit that includes a full no-trade clause for the next two seasons. He is represented by mega-agent Pat Brisson, who also represents Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews (and Jason Robertson, Trevor Zegras and dozens of other stars).

Friedman does include that “no one would comment. Not Larkin, not agent Pat Brisson, not Red Wings Executive Vice-President & GM Steve Yzerman.” But he goes on to write:

“This is also another sign of how the league is changing. Players are getting bolder with these requests — especially in the aftermath of Matthew Tkachuk’s and Quinn Hughes’ power moves into different situations.

There is also the Yzerman factor. He will not be bullied into any scenario he dislikes, no matter how much pressure is applied. It’s hard to believe, though, that someone won’t step up to make it worth his while.”

It’s worth mentioning that Larkin played for current Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill for the first seven seasons of his NHL career.

Should the Blackhawks Call About Larkin?

Yes.

Larkin is a bona fide No. 1 center in the NHL. Is he a 100-point guy? No. But he’s scored at least 30 goals in every full NHL regular season since the COVID-impacted 2020-21 season. He’s been an impact player for the United States in the 4 Nations Face-Off and the Winter Olympics. He’s a leader.

(And, selfishly, it doesn’t hurt that he’s went to Michigan.)

Would the Blackhawks making a play for a legit top-six center complicate their roster construction given the number of potential centers in the organization? It might. As it stands right now, the Blackhawks likely plan on their top three centers to start the 2026-27 season being Connor Bedard, Anton Frondell and Oliver Moore. Frank Nazar and Ryan Greene could also be in that mix; both have played center during their young NHL careers. And incoming top prospect Roman Kantserov played center primarily in the KHL this season, though he recently admitted the transition to the NHL will likely be easier on the wing.

But none of these young centers has the experience that Larkin would bring to the table.

Would it move Frondell back to the wing? Maybe. Bedard? Perhaps.

Would the Blackhawks be a better team with someone like Larkin in their lineup for the next five years? Absolutely.

But there are two more critical questions that would need to be answered:

Would Larkin accept a trade to Chicago?

and

What would it cost to get Larkin out of Detroit?

To the first question, the catalyst could be his relationship with Blashill.

Regarding the cost…

In his spring updates, Scott Wheeler at The Athletic ranked Detroit the NHL’s No. 4 pipeline. However, he has two goalies ranked as their top two prospects, and a right-handed defenseman third.

The Red Wings do not own a first-round pick in the 2026 NHL Draft; they traded it to St. Louis for defenseman Justin Faulk, and then failed to make the playoffs. That pick is now No. 15 overall.

Friedman is right: Yzerman isn’t going to sell low on his soon-to-be 30-year-old captain. But this getting out, even if nobody will go on the record to confirm it (Darren Dreger also tried), does hurt his leverage to a degree.

The Blackhawks have young prospects and plenty of draft capital to play with if they made a phone call here. Would it cost the Blackhawks the No. 4 overall pick in this year’s draft? I’m not sure Chicago would have to swing that big. But three picks in the first round of the 2027 NHL Draft would be a good place to start a conversation.
