There is plenty of focus on the midterm elections on the national level, but just a few months after that the city of Chicago will vote in yet another election.
The citywide elections will take place early next year, and while there will be plenty of buzz around the mayoral race, the city’s 50 City Council seats will also be on the ballot, as will a series of referendums and other items for voters to weigh and consider.
Wednesday marked the latest chapter in the evolving saga of the Chicago mayoral election, as Illinois Comptroller Susana Mendoza announced that she would be making a second run at City Hall.
Mendoza had announced last year she wouldn’t seek reelection to statewide office, but now she has her eyes on a different prize.
“I’ve been thinking about this for a long time,” Mendoza, 54, said in a campaign announcement video posted to YouTube. “About how a city this strong should work better for the people who built it.”

When is the Chicago mayoral election?
As is the case with most municipal elections in Illinois, Chicago’s municipal elections take place in off-years from statewide and national races.
The city also uses a run-off system, meaning there aren’t Democratic and Republican-specific primaries. Instead, all candidates run in the initial race, and then the top-two vote-getters face-off in a run-off election if no candidate receives 50% or more of the vote in the first round.
The first round of voting in the city is set to take place on Tuesday, Feb. 23, 2027.
If a candidate doesn’t receive a majority of the vote in that first election, a run-off election is set for Tuesday, April 6.
Which mayoral candidates have announced runs?
In addition to Mendoza, at least two other candidates have already thrown their hats into the ring for the 2027 mayoral election.
Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas, who is currently running for reelection in the role in the November election, has said that she will run for mayor of Chicago for the first time.
A third candidate is also in the running, as longtime Rep. Mike Quigley has announced that he will run for mayor in Chicago.
Quigley has been in office since 2009 when Rahm Emanuel vacated his seat to become former President Barack Obama’s chief of staff.
He is running for reelection to congress in the 2026 election, but will run for the fifth floor at City Hall in February.
According to WTTW, businessmen Joe Holberg and Liam Stanton are also running for the office.
Potential candidates for office:
At the top of the list of candidates who haven’t officially announced their intention to run is Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, who has not directly addressed whether he’ll aim for a second term in office.
Multiple members of the Chicago City Council have also been linked to possible runs for mayor, including Alds. Bill Conway and Andre Vasquez.
Perhaps the biggest questions are facing Illinois Secretary of State Alexi Giannoulias, who has a massive war chest and perhaps the most name recognition of any candidate that could jump into the race. Giannoulias has been mum on whether or not he’ll seek the office, and he is seeking reelection as secretary of state this November.
Finally there’s businessman Willie Wilson, who has run for mayor multiple times but has recently indicated that he’ll let voters decide whether he’s going to launch another bid this time around.
