Sweet & Tender Hooligans – Smith’s stellar cover band
Although British band The Smiths never scored any U.S. chart success during their mid-1980s heyday, they are undoubtedly one of the most influential groups to emerge from that era. As such, it’s only natural that numerous Smiths tribute bands are floating around. One of the best among them, Los Angeles-based Sweet & Tender Hooligans, will take the stage at The Observatory on June 5. While the band itself doesn’t go out of its way to look like Morrissey or The Smiths band members, singer Jose Maldonado does a good job of recreating Morrissey’s image, mannerisms and singing style. Die-hard Smiths fans will love Sweet & Tender Hooligans’ mix of deep cuts and favorites like “This Charming Man,” as well as Morrissey solo tracks such as “Every Day Is Like Sunday.”
Sweet & Tender Hooligans: Friday, June 5 at The Observatory, 2871 University Ave., 8 p.m. $30. www.observatorysd.comVivaldi to Guaraldi – Adrienne Nims and Dan Bailey

Doors doppelgangers Wild Child return to the House of Blues on June 6. Celebrating their 40th, Wild Child not only unleashes a physical resemblance to late 1960’s era Jim Morrison, but the band also does a great job of replicating Morrison’s vocal tone and mannerisms. However, the band’s secret weapon is keyboardist Kit Potamkin, whose recreation of the Doors’ signature sound is spot on, particularly notable on Wild Child’s version of “Light My Fire.” If you’re a fan of The Doors, Wild Child’s live performance should be top priority.

Unsteady features a rotating cast of band members, but if you like authentic-sounding horn and farfisa organ-driven tunes, three decades after their beginnings, Unsteady are still the area’s best.
