However, both Skubal and Verlander are set to return soon, which means it is time for them to rehab in Triple-A before heading back to the majors.
Luckily for the Tigers, there is a very real chance that both pitchers make their first rehab starts this week, which just so happens to be against the Iowa Cubs in Des Moines.
Detroit is 22-38 at the moment, battling the Royals for last place in the AL Central, so it may be too late for these arms to save the team’s season. If anything, their returns could help bolster trade value, specifically for Skubal. Speaking of which, the Cubs were listed as a possible trade partner for Skubal, so that is something to keep an eye on.
Verlander is projected to start on Tuesday, his first outing since his lone start of the season on March 30, as he has been on the IL with a hip injury.
Skubal threw a simulated game on Monday, which is another step toward his imminent return. As long as no issues pop up over the next day or two, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press has reported that Skubal could make his rehab start on Saturday against the I-Cubs. Skubal has not thrown in a real game since April 29, having undergone NanoScope surgery to remove loose bodies in his elbow.
