ROCHESTER, N.Y. — On the last day of Mental Health Awareness Month, News10NBC is focusing on men’s mental health and wellness, a growing public health concern marked by societal pressure, biological factors, and unique barriers. The show also features a talk with the founder of One Love, One Way, and a chat with a local musician.
In the past, men have been told suffering in silence is stoic or a sign of valor. But according to Mental Health Stats, men are four times more likely to commit suicide and two to three times more likely to misuse drugs. On average, they delay getting help 11 years after mental health symptoms appear.
CEO of Recovery Houses of Rochester talks about his experiences and support group
News10NBC’s Lynette Adams spoke with Van Smith, president and CEO of the Recovery Houses of Rochester. Smith recovered from a substance use disorder and mental health issues more than three decades ago.
He shared how he cares for his mental well-being and talked about a new support group for men.
