Winter Juniors qualifier Jovan Mijailovic has announced his verbal commitment* to swim and study at Cornell University beginning in the fall of 2027. He publicized the news on Instagram, writing:
After careful consideration, I am beyond excited to announce my commitment to the admissions process at Cornell University, where I hope to continue my athletic and academic career! I want to thank coaches Dave, Rod, Jim, Brian, and my Serbian coach, Voja, for their constant support throughout my life and for helping shape me into the person and athlete I am today. Additionally, I am extremely grateful to coaches Wes and Caleb for giving me this incredible opportunity. Lastly, thank you to my family, teammates, and friends for always believing in me. GO BIG RED!!

A junior at Lyons Township High School in Illinois, Mijailovic has competed for the school’s swimming and diving team since his freshman year. He also currently trains year-round with the FMC Aquatic Club, where he primarily specializes in sprint freestyle.
Mijailovic qualified and competed at Winter Juniors – West for the first time this past December, finishing 66th in the 100 free (45.39) and 90th in the 100 back (50.92), while also helping FMC place seventh in the 400 free relay (44.61 anchor), 10th in the 200 free relay (21.06 leadoff), and 15th in the 800 free relay (1:38.26 leadoff). All of his individual swims and relay splits were then-personal bests with the exception of the 100 back, which was just off the 50.22 he had set at a smaller club meet a few weeks prior.
On the high school scene, Mijailovic helped Lyons to a fifth-place team finish at this past February’s Illinois High School Association (IHSA) State Championships, the school’s best finish in his time with the program. Individually, he placed fifth in the 100 free (44.82) and seventh in the 50 free (20.65), while leading off the bronze medal-winning 400 free relay (44.98) and the fifth-place 200 free relay (20.84), the first time he cracked the top 20 at the meet (individually or on relays).
Mijailovic clocked his current lifetime best of 1:38.08 in the 200 free at the NCSA Spring Championships at the end of March. The swim earned him 14th place, his highest-ever finish at the meet.
Over the course of the 2025-26 season, Mijailovic dropped five and a half seconds in the 200 free, over two seconds in the 100 free and 100 back, and a full second in the 50 free, a strong trajectory that caught the eye of Cornell’s coaches.

50 Freestyle: 20.65 100 Freestyle: 44.82 200 Freestyle: 1:38.08A Division I program, Cornell competes in the Ivy League Conference, with the men’s team placing fifth out of eight teams at this past season’s conference championships. Mijailovic’s current best in the 200 free would have qualified for the ‘C’ final, already putting him in position to be an immediate contributor with two full seasons of training still ahead before his first conference meet. Times of 20.05 in the 50 free, 44.02 in the 100 free, and 48.86 in the 100 back were needed to earn a second swim in those events.
Mijailovic is the first publicized commit in the Big Red’s class of 2031 so far.
*Note: A verbal commitment between an Ivy League coach and a prospective student-athlete is not an offer of admission, as only the Admission Office has that authority. The coach can only commit his or her support in the admission process. Ivy League Admission Offices do not issue “Likely Letters” before October 1 of the prospective student-athlete’s senior year of high school. The Likely Letter, while issued after an initial read of the student’s application, is not an offer of admission to the university.
