Cubs Prospects Report .. May 28, 2026: Hartshorn, Ayers Go Deep, Iowa Shutout Win, More ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

It was a perfect 4-0 day for the Cubs‘ minor league squads, as they followed the lead of the big club. Iowa didn’t have the greatest day at the plate, but they didn’t need it thanks to some great pitching. Knoxville and South Bend each had one of their biggest prospects go deep. And Myrtle Beach snapped its long, nine-game losing streak. Let’s get to it.

Triple-A Iowa Cubs

Just three Iowa Cubs collected hits on Wednesday, but the offensive struggles didn’t matter as they used a dominant combined pitching effort to pick up a 1-0 win over the Indianapolis Indians (Pirates).

Ty Blach, Gavin Hollowell, Collin Snider, and Christian Roa combined to toss a shutout and allowed just three hits. Blach got the start and struck out six over 4.2 innings, allowing two hits and walking three. Hollowell followed that with a spotless 1.1 innings that included a pair of strikeouts. Snider tossed the next frame with a 1-2-3 inning. Then Roa shut the door with just one hit allowed and three strikeouts over the last two innings.

As for the lone run, that came in the top of the first. Jonathan Long and BJ Murray both singled, then Owen Miller was hit by a pitch to load the bases with just one out. Following that, a wild pitch allowed Long to plate the only run of the game, and Iowa earned the low-scoring win.

Notable Performances

Ty Blach | 4.2 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 6 K, 3 BB Jonathan Long | 2-4, R Christian Roa | 2.0 IP, H, 0 R, 3 K, 0 BB

FINAL: Cubs 1, Indians 0 | Box Score

Double-A Knoxville Smokies

The Smokies took one in extras over the Chattanooga Lookouts (Reds) on Wednesday. Knoxville got on the board early in the second thanks to a solo homer from Carter Trice. 1-0 was how the score would remain until the bottom of the fifth when a double off Grant Kipp tied the game at 1-1. In the sixth, the two teams each picked up a pair of runs, with the Smokies’ runs coming off RBI singles from Cam Sisneros and Devin Ortiz.

After the Lookouts tied the game with a pair off Jace Beck, Owen Ayers answered right back for Knoxville with a solo blast in the top of the seventh. Unfortunately, the Smokies yet again were unable to hold the lead as Beck allowed a solo homer of his own, which tied the game.

From there, we’d go to extras. With the ghost runner on second, Trice led off the inning with an RBI single to break the tie. Knoxville would take a 5-4 lead into the bottom half of the 10th, where Marino Santy was able to shut the door and keep Chattanooga off the board.

Notable Performances

Carter Trice | 2-5, HR, 2 RBI Owen Ayers | 1-2, HR, 2 BB Grant Kipp | 5.0 IP, 4 H, ER, 8 K, 0 BB

FINAL: Smokies 5, Lookouts 4 | Box Score

High-A South Bend Cubs

South Bend’s offense broke out and helped them cruise to an easy 13-5 win against the Fort Wayne TinCaps (Padres) on Wednesday. They had several standout efforts on offense, but none better than new callup Josiah Hartshorn’s. Hartshorn went 3-4 with a home run, five RBI, and two runs scored. The other RBI on the day came from Leonel Espinoza (3), Christian Olivo (2), Kane Kepley (1), and Dillon Granadillo (1).

This one was never really close as South Bend jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first, then extended that lead to 7-0 with a five-run third. They combined for six more runs in the fourth and fifth, and just liked that it was a 13-1 ballgame.

Kevin Valdez started on the mound, and he went 4.1 solid innings. Kenyi Perez, J.P. Wheat, and Kenten Egbert all tossed scoreless outings out of the bullpen, while Ben Johnson was tagged for four runs (two earned) in his 0.2 innings.

Notable Performances

Josiah Hartshorn | 3-4, HR, 2 R, 5 RBI Kane Kepley | 2-4, 2 R, RBI, 2 SB Ty Southisene | 3-4, 4 R, 2 SB

FINAL: Cubs 13, TinCaps 5 | Box Score

Low-A Myrtle Beach Pelicans

After a slow start, Myrtle Beach’s bats broke out against the Wilson Warbirds (Brewers) in the middle frames en route to a 6-2 win on Wednesday, snapping a nine-game losing skid. Dominick Reid got the start on the mound for the Pelicans, and he was very good. Through 5.0 innings, Reid struck out nine Warbirds, and allowed just one run on two hits and two walks.

Yahil Melendez got the scoring started for Myrtle Beach, giving them a 1-0 lead on an RBI single in the fourth. After Wilson tied the game up in the top of the fifth, Logan Poteet answered immediately in the bottom half of the frame with a three-run homer, giving the Pelicans the lead right back. The Warbirds made it a 4-2 score with a run of their own in the sixth, but in the seventh, Derniche Valdez put this one out of reach with a two-run single, making it a 6-2 advantage for Myrtle Beach.

The Pelicans kept the Warbirds off the board for the remainder of this one and took home a 6-2 win.
