Must-watch Alabama games for new fans ...Middle East

The University of Alabama will welcome another freshman class to campus this fall. With 54% of the school’s enrollment being out-of-state students, some new Alabama students may not be familiar with the Crimson Tide football team and some of their historic wins.

2009: No. 1 Alabama 12, Tennessee 10

Year 3 of the Nick Saban era brought Alabama its 13th national title and first since 1992. The triumph did not come without near misses, and one came in the form of rival Tennessee at home.

The Volunteers outgained the Crimson Tide 341-256 and did not allow a touchdown. First-year head coach Lane Kiffin and his team had a golden chance to stun an archrival on the road, potentially even eliminating Alabama from national title contention.

Tennessee kicker Daniel Lincoln trotted onto the field to attempt the game-winning field goal from 44 yards. He missed two of his three attempts on the day, with one being blocked by Crimson Tide defensive tackle Terrence Cody.

Lincoln booted the kick away, only for Cody to show up once again with four seconds to play.

“Blocked again. Cody again. Alabama wins,” said Verne Lundquist, SEC on CBS play-by-play commentator, as time expired.

2012 SEC championship: No. 2 Alabama 32, No. 3 Georgia 28

The 2012 SEC championship game served as a de facto playoff semifinal, with the winner likely to be selected to meet No. 1 Notre Dame in Miami for the BCS national championship in January. It lived up to its billing, as the Crimson Tide pulled off a comeback victory in Atlanta.

The defending champion Crimson Tide opened a 10-7 halftime lead over the Bulldogs, but surrendered 14 unanswered points and trailed 21-10 late in the third quarter. A valiant ground effort propelled Alabama back in front, as true freshman running back T.J. Yeldon and junior running back Eddie Lacy each found the end zone, giving Alabama a 25-21 lead early in the fourth.

Georgia fired back quickly, and the Crimson Tide trailed 28-25 late with its championship hopes on the line. Then, a first-down play-action heave from quarterback A.J. McCarron found its way into true freshman receiver Amari Cooper’s hands, who strolled in for a go-ahead 44-yard score. The Bulldogs threatened in the final minute, but fell short, and Alabama punched its ticket to a date with the Fighting Irish.

2018 CFP national championship: No. 4 Alabama 26, No. 3 Georgia 23 (F/OT)

Like the 2012 SEC championship game, Alabama pulled off a comeback victory in thrilling fashion over the Georgia Bulldogs in Atlanta, clinching its 17th national title and fifth under Saban.

Former Alabama defensive coordinator and Georgia head coach Kirby Smart’s squad got the better of Saban’s in the opening 30 minutes of action, taking a 13-0 lead into the break. Crimson Tide starting quarterback Jalen Hurts struggled throughout the first half, which prompted Saban to make a change under center.

True freshman signal-caller Tua Tagovailoa led Alabama’s offense after halftime. The Ewa Beach, Hawaii, native produced the team’s first scoring drive of the evening when he found a fellow true freshman in receiver Henry Ruggs III for a touchdown.

Tagovailoa continued to hamper the Bulldogs’ defense as the half progressed, leading three more scoring drives, including a game-tying touchdown to receiver Calvin Ridley with under four minutes to play.

The Crimson Tide marched downfield with a chance to win, but a missed 36-yard attempt from kicker Andy Papponastos as time expired resulted in overtime. Alabama’s defense held Georgia to a field goal, and it appeared the Bulldogs would at least hold the Crimson Tide to 3 points after linebacker Davin Bellamy sacked Tagovailoa for a 16-yard loss.

Then, one of the most memorable plays of the Saban era took place. Tagovailoa found another true freshman wide receiver in Devonta Smith for a 41-yard game-winning touchdown pass, which garnered the nickname, “2nd and 26.”

“I asked Tua after the game, I said, ‘Why did you take a sack when we needed a field goal to stay in the game?’ He said he just needed more room to throw the ball,” Saban said in February 2018. “That’s how it happened.”

2025 CFP first round: No. 9 Alabama 34, No. 8 Oklahoma 24

Head coach Kalen DeBoer’s first College Football Playoff game did not start how the Crimson Tide hoped, but an impressive comeback effort saw the team secure the first-ever road victory in the 12-team Playoff era.

Amid rumors of the University of Michigan zeroing in on DeBoer for its vacant head coaching gig, Alabama quickly trailed 17-0 to Oklahoma on the road in the CFP. Much like its last trip to Norman, the Crimson Tide struggled to move the football.

The team found its first chunk play of the evening through true freshman wideout Lotzeir Brooks, who reeled in an underthrown ball from quarterback Ty Simpson on third down. Brooks later found the end zone to cap off the team’s first scoring drive of the evening on an impressive fourth-down effort.

Alabama leveled the game at 17 apiece just before halftime through defensive back Zabien Brown’s pick-six. It carried that momentum into the second half, outscoring the Sooners 17-7 in the second half and punching its ticket to the Rose Bowl.

“I couldn’t be more proud of these guys,” DeBoer said. “Resiliency, it’s been kind of a theme all year long.”
