Talking about the Chicago Bears’ offensive line has been a point of frustration for most of our time operating at this site. But the arrival of Darnell Wright as the team’s first-round pick in 2023 has started to change the narrative. Wright has been a solid starter since Week 1 of his pro career and seems to be getting better each season. What else could you want?
Well, the answer to that question comes from Bears Offensive Line Coach Dan Roushar. In a 34-second video clip shared by CHGO, Roushar shares one thing he wants to see from Darnell Wright while discussing Chicago’s starting right tackle in a way that captures how highly the team thinks of him and his future:
"The ceiling is incredibly high." ?Dan Roushar talks about 2026 for Darnell Wright: ⬇️ pic.twitter.com/z1XyMtDPE9
— CHGO Bears (@CHGO_Bears) May 25, 2026More from Roushar:
“Darnell has personal recognition being named second-team All-Pro. There were some extreme moments where he played at a really high level. Obviously, he played with an injury. But when we look at the tape, he and I, and our staff, we look at it with him, I think he recognizes how much we need him. The ceiling is incredibly high for the player. He just has to show consistency daily, starting with technique, and then carrying that through to action.”
When it comes to Darnell Wright, I couldn’t have said it any better than the Bears’ offensive line coach did above. There were stretches when Wright played at a high level. And because of those moments, he was able to land some well-deserved recognition as a second-team All-Pro. And yet, it feels like Wright is just scratching the surface of what he can do as a pro.
Darnell Wright could have a huge 2026 for the Chicago Bears

And with good reason. Wright played in 16 of the team’s 17 regular-season games and started both of the team’s postseason contests. It was a breakout campaign for Wright in 2025. He gave up only three sacks, allowed a pressure rate of just 3.6 percent, posted an impressive 85.6 run-blocking grade from Pro Football Focus, and finished the year with a PFF overall grade of 82.0 that ranked 12th of 89 offensive tackles. There was a lot to like about Wright’s season.
And yet, there is an expectation that more is on the horizon for Darnell Wright. Rewatching that clip from Roushar had me thinking about how the Bears’ OL coach laid out what needs to happen next for Wright to live up to his potential. Consistency is hard to come by in any profession. And the challenges of being a consistently good offensive lineman in the NFL seem like an otherworldly task to mere mortals. But if anyone can do it, it’s Wright … right? And if he can pull it off, even more accolades will be on the way.
The life of an offensive lineman is often so thankless. Not only do you need to keep your body in peak condition to play a position that demands a unique combination of power, finesse, and agility, but you also need to be aware of how defenders will attack you and adjust to that. Plus, offensive linemen need to know the play details and the responsibilities of everyone around them. In short, a lot is happening for every offensive lineman on every offensive snap. So, all things considered, what Wright has done while playing for multiple head coaches and offensive systems makes his development that much more impressive to me.
There are two primary reasons I didn’t write that the life of an offensive lineman is completely thankless. Firstly, Ben Johnson seems to have some real admiration for the offensive line. The Bears’ head coach clearly values the position group, as a whole, and the individuals who make their marks in the trenches. I’m still convinced that Johnson will someday allow Wright’s athleticism to show off with a trick play at some point. But we will cross that bridge when we get to it.
Secondly, for Wright there is a light at the end of the tunnel in the form of a second contract. Earlier in the offseason, the Bears picked up the fifth-year option on Wright’s rookie deal. That move seems like just a formality ahead of a major payday that would come with a contract extension. Bears General Manager Ryan Poles says a Wright extension is a priority. We’ll see if the two sides can come together on a deal before the season kicks off in September.
