The future of the College Football Playoff is expected to be decided in the coming months with stakeholders set to decide on formats ranging from 12 teams to 24 teams.
Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko was asked about his preference for the future of the CFP during a media appearance at the SEC spring meetings on Tuesday.
Elko gave a candid, tongue-in-cheek answer and said he’d like the CFP to expand to 40 teams.
“There’s self-preservation, right? If you really ask me, on the record, what does Mike Elko want? I want 40 because then I’ll make it and then I won’t get fired,” he said.

The CFP format is locked in at 12 teams for the 2026 season. If it’s to change for 2027 and beyond, any adjustments would need to be approved before Dec. 1.
