IPL 2026, Eliminator: Battle of powerplay to decide fate of Sunrisers Hyderabad & Rajasthan Royals ...Middle East

Sport by : (Inside sport) -

These are the matches that every team prepares for, coming into an IPL season. Perhaps the most difficult match on the schedule, the eliminator, between SRH and RR is to take place in Mullanpur, and it will be curtains for the team finishing second in this race. And in a way it will be an encounter, which by all means, could be decided by — which sides batters end up shining.

It is not like, the other departments for both teams have not performed, but in the playoffs, teams really need to beat in other team at their strength. And for the two facing off, batting is truly what can win matches.

SRH’s brute batting force

What is the most remarkable aspect of Hyderabad’s batting? It it the high-risk approach of their batters? Or is it the relentless approach that they take? Look closely, and it has to be the consistency — while playing high-risk shots and also their approach, is what makes them the best in the league. All of their top 5 batters have scored over 260 runs, which puts them in a secure zone, that if a couple of batters fail, there are others to follow, who can take over.

This time, contrary to what many thought, the attack has centered around Heinrich Klaasen, who has provided a lot of stability in the middle order. With 606 runs in the league, he is chasing the orange cap. Ishan Kishan has been equally good, scoring 569 at an SR of 178, followed by Abhishek at 563, with an SR of 206.

Hyderabad, this year has a bit of batting advantage over Rajasthan. The two faced off twice in IPL 2026 — and both time SRH emerged winners, needless to say, largely due to their batting. In the first encounter on April 13. it was Kishan’s 91 from 44 that blew away RR. And in the April 25 encounter, then stand-in skipper Kishan neutralised Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s 37-ball 103, with 31-ball 74. So, form and numbers are clearly are on their side.

RR’s unpredictable, yet destructive batting

For all practical purposes, 50% of the outcome in this match depends on how 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryanshi fares. The kid hardly has any pressure on him, and has the green light from the management, to play freely. If he scores, the total reaches past 220-230, perhaps even more. That in a way gives confidence to the other batters as well.

He too is in the running for the orange cap, and has scored 583 in 16, at a strike-rate of 232. Not far behind is the backbone of this batting side, Dhruv Jurel at 458, followed by Yashasvi Jaiswal at 397. The assuring factor for them is, their top 6, all have over 200 runs to their name.

Win powerplay, go to qualifier 2

Leave aside the 20 overs, it is the 6 overs of powerplay alone, that could decide the fate of both teams. Needless to say, these overs set the tone for a big score. In that too, the onus will be on Abhishek and Vaibhav, from their respective teams. The SRH batter has scored 369 of 563 runs in the PP this year, where the SR has been a staggering 217.1. He has also managed to score two fifties in that time period this year.

Whereas, Vaibhav has been a notch ahead of his senior, scoring 430 of his 583 runs in the PP. The southpaw batter is striking at 231.2, having scored three 50s in this time frame.

Go pace heavy in Mullanpur

This wicket is a graveyard of sorts for the spinners, especially in the second innings. So, the teams would like to bat second under all circumstances. That is also because, there is a bit of lateral movement in the first innings, that could just make life difficult for the top 3 batters.

How do pacers stack up? SRH have been surprisingly good in this department, after a few bad games with the ball initially. Eshan Malinga has been the guiding light for them, picking up 19 in 14 matches (9.27 economy), and newbie Sabik Hussain has 15 scalps (9.07 economy) to his name already. Skipper Cummins has been the miserly one with an economy of 8.67.

Whereas for RR, just about everything depends on Jofra Archer. He has 21 wickets in 14 matches. Brijesh Sharma has been decent with 13 wickets in 11, but the third pacer has been a problem. Nandre Burger has an economy rate over 11 this season, Sandeep Sharma has been ineffective with 5 wickets and similar is the case with Tushar Deshpande, with an economy of 12.05.

With batting attack such dangerous, a bowling unit that can withhold the hitting from opposition batters, is most likely to come on top.
