2026 NCAA ‘B’ finalist Sydney Gring has announced her transfer to NC State. Gring entered the transfer portal days after it was announced that head coach Chase Kreitler was resigning from his position, effective immediately.
“I am SO excited to announce my commitment to NC State!!! I am beyond grateful to be able to finish out my academic and athletic career with the Wolfpack!
I want to thank Braden and the entire NC State staff for giving me grace and being patient throughout this entire process. I also want to thank the NC State team for making me feel at home instantly.
I next want to thank my coaches and mentors at Pitt that have truly shaped me into who I am today. I cannot put into words how grateful I am for Chase and the time he spent just being a person to lean on and learn from day in and day out. To Sam, Kev, Kelsey, Kaersten, Gideon, Michael, and Marian… you guys have made this experience unforgettable and I will forever cherish my time and conversations with every single one of you. You have shown what a true mentor and role model looks like.
Finally I want to thank my family. This past month has been nothing but easy and my family has seen me at my absolute best and absolute worst. Countless hours on the phone and the going back and forth, they were there through everything. They have been my back bone since day 1 and I wouldn’t want it any other way.
I AM SOO EXCITED FOR THIS NEXT CHAPTER!!! GO PACK!”
Gring just finished her junior season at Pitt and was the highest remaining NCAA scorer that was set to return to the program this fall as Claire Jansen graduated this spring and Julian Koch already announced his transfer to Tennessee on the men’s side. Gring was the 2nd highest individual scorer for the Pitt women at the 2026 NCAA Championships, helping the Pitt women to a 16th place finish, their highest in school history.
Gring scored in all three of her individual events at 2026 NCAAs, finishing 10th in the 200 IM in a lifetime best 1:54.96, 11th in the 100 back in a lifetime best 51.08, and 16th in the 100 fly in a season best 51.33. She scored a total of 14 individual points.
In addition to her individual impact, Gring also swam on four relays for Pitt. She led off their 200 free relay in a lifetime best 22.18, helping that relay finish 16th. She swam another personal best 47.91 leading off their 400 free relay that finished 16th. She split a 1:44.20 200 free on their 800 free relay that was 12th.
Gring’s Best SCY Times Are:
100 back: 51.08 100 fly: 51.25 200 IM: 1:54.96 50 free: 22.18 100 free: 47.91The NC State women finished 9th at the 2026 NCAA Championships with 196.5 points. Erika Pelaez led the way with 36.5 individual points including a 4th place finish in the 100 back (49.95) and 3rd place finish in the 200 back (1:49.08).
Gring is a strong addition to NC State this fall as her 14 individual points would have moved the team up one spot to finish ahead of Louisville who scored 201.5 points. Gring will be able to train alongside backstrokers such as Pelaez and Leah Shackley (49.98 for 6th at 2026 NCAAs) as well as Katharine Berkoff and Rhyan White at the pro level. Both Pelaez and Shackley also swam the 100 fly at 2026 NCAAs as Pelaez was 11th in a 50.98 and Shackley was 17th in a 51.39, just 0.06 behind Gring.
