A new batch of OTA workouts is set to get going on Wednesday as the Chicago Bears continue their offseason training program. And with it, the latest chapter of Caleb Williams’ development will begin. Williams had a stellar 2025 season for Chicago, but there is still another level to his game that I think he can reach. If he can get there, I think we will look back at this offseason as a pivotal point in his development.
With that in mind, Bears Quarterbacks Coach J.T. Barrett has an idea of what he wants to see from Chicago’s No. 1 signal caller going into the 2026 NFL season. Strangely enough, it begins with the idea of doing less. No, seriously. Jason Lieser has more in this Chicago Sun-Times story:
One of their main messages to Williams this offseason, as quarterbacks coach J.T. Barrett put it recently, is simply “Do less.” There are times the Bears need Williams to be that one-of-one gunslinger, especially when they’re desperate late in games. But they’d like to see a lot more of the simple throws that the NFL’s best rely on to build 300-yard passing performances.
“We don’t have to work as hard for our money,” Barrett explained. “There’s times where we could just work through our progression and get the ball out on time instead of having to create and extend plays.”
Don’t get me wrong. I love the magic that comes with Caleb Williams improvising and extending plays. I do not want the Bears to coach that out of his system. But I understand where Barrett is coming from in wanting his quarterback to take the play in front of him every once in a while to make it easier on Williams in the long run. Because, for all the highlights Williams created with his off-the-cuff plays, his completion percentage took a dip to 58.1 percent in Year 2 after posting a 62.5 percent as a rookie. Perhaps taking some easier throws early in games will save the Iceman from needing to go into Superman mode late.
For what it’s worth, I think Caleb Williams understands that, too. Williams outlined his offseason to-do list shortly after the team’s season ended in January, which included improving his accuracy and footwork and building connections with his pass catchers. I look forward to seeing how he goes about balancing taking what the defense gives him and holding out for the types of explosive plays that can change a game. That might not be an easy needle to thread, but I bet it will be fun to watch.

I am totally vibing with this message. Reading the passage above from the Sun-Times makes me think of Joe Maddon’s “do simple better” mantra from his time managing the Chicago Cubs. It also reminds me of when I was younger, and my pops would tell me to “work smarter, not harder.” The “do less” message from Barrett seems to align with those two ideas. More importantly, it lines up with what Bears Head Coach Ben Johnson said earlier in the offseason about getting back to the basics. I don’t think this is the last we will hear of this theme between now and when the season kicks off in September.
Doing the little things right tends to lead to big things (eventually) happening. And while I think big things are ahead for Caleb Williams and the Bears, I know that doing the little things now will have everyone prepared for the major moments on the horizon.
