With the No. 13 pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, the Los Angeles Rams threw a massive curveball. Despite the presence of reigning MVP Matthew Stafford, the Rams opted to take quarterback Ty Simpson with the selection.
To say that was a shocking decision is an understatement. The NFL world was equal parts surprised and confused by the pick. Given the current state of the Rams’ roster, there was some thought the team would be better served getting an immediate contributor who could push Stafford to another Super Bowl win before he calls it a career.

Because of that, the Simpson pick wasn’t met with much support from draft analysts. Yahoo Sports’ own Nate Tice gave the team a D+ for taking Simpson in the first round. Other outlets felt similarly.
Simpson, meanwhile, wasn’t bothered at all about what others thought. The quarterback explained why he “didn’t really care” about the response to his selection in an interview with Sports Illustrated.
“I really didn’t care, to be honest with you. Everybody can have an opinion, but it’s my job to take care of my business. So, the Rams took me with the 13th overall pick, so now it’s my job to be the best player I can be, the best Ty I can be, and go out there and prove them right. I don’t really listen to all that. My job is to make sure to do whatever my team needs me to do to win and that’s what I’m going to do.”
It’s a fair point. Simpson had no control over how high he was drafted, so why should he care what other people think about it? No matter where Simpson was drafted, he was always going to try and develop into the best player possible. That wasn’t going to change regardless of where Simpson was selected.
While some might still take issue with the pick, Simpson actually sees a pretty big advantage to going to play for the Rams, per Sports Illustrated.
“I think it’s really, really cool to, one, be in the room with Matthew, who has done it at a high level for so long, and then see it from a wide receiver standpoint with Davante and Puka. And Davante especially, because of him being similar to Matthew, but I think both of those guys are two guys who are one of the greatest at their positions. The fact that I can watch both of them at the same time on my team, it’s a big advantage for me.”
With the Rams, Simpson will have an excellent foundation of players and coaches from which he can learn. Davante Adams, Sean McVay and Stafford should be able to help the rookie along quite a bit.

Simpson also has the advantage of being able to be patient. Barring a disaster, Simpson shouldn’t see the field much — if at all — as a rookie. Hypothetically, he can experience all the typical rookie growing pains behind the scenes and be ready to fully hit the ground running whenever the Rams deem him worthy of the starting job.
That’s worked for other elite quarterbacks of the past — like Aaron Rodgers, Jordan Love and Philip Rivers. If Simpson can come anywhere close to that level, people won’t question his draft selection much longer.
