The big benefit Rabbit Taylor-Demerson is seeing from head coach Mike LaFleur ...Middle East

Sport by : (Arizona sports) -

The Arizona Cardinals flipped their head-coaching script on its head this offseason.

Moving away from the defensive-minded Jonathan Gannon, the Cardinals turned to the offensive stylings of first-year head coach Mike LaFleur.

Plenty of Arizona’s offensive players have already raved about LaFleur’s process and the possibilities of what the unit can become.

The benefits of the offensive-minded LaFleur don’t stop on that side of the football, however. And it hasn’t taken long for safety Dadrion “Rabbit” Taylor-Demerson, who didn’t have an offensive-minded head coach through college and his first two years as a pro, to see.

“One thing I like about having an offensive-minded coach … we kind of get that cross-training,” Taylor-Demerson told Arizona Sports’ Wolf & Luke on Thursday. “Whenever there’s things that need to be corrected, Mike does a really good job of making sure we can hear those corrections as well.

“We get some cross-training on the field and it’s really nice to get that to just learn more about the game.”

For Taylor-Demerson, that added knowledge LaFleur is passing on to the defense could come in handy for the third-year pro.

With Jalen Thompson signing with the Dallas Cowboys this offseason, there’s a void that needs filled alongside safety Budda Baker. Taylor-Demerson is the front-runner for the role, though he has some new competition in the room with free-agent addition Andrew Wingard.

That belief hasn’t stopped Taylor-Demerson from finding new ways to improve. And much like LaFleur, the safety is finding it from a new source on the other side of the ball.

“For me, I just think my football IQ knowledge. Not to say I’m a dummy on the field, but pre-snap reads, understanding quarterback body language and how they maneuver,” Taylor-Demerson said. “Me and (quarterback Gardner Minshew) got real close as soon as he got here and he makes me better every single day.

“I literally tell him every single day, ‘If you got to pick on me to get me better, just pick on me.’ I want to be the best I can be, so I really appreciate those guys.”

Armed with a different perspective, built-in knowledge of Arizona’s defense under defensive coordinator Nick Rallis the past two seasons and more reps under his belt, the starting role next to Baker feels like Taylor-Demerson’s to lose.
