What does the future hold for the York family?
I wrote Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York. After I published it last year, dozens of people came forward, including former staff, school friends, protection officers, colleagues and diplomats, with new stories about the couple’s behaviour.
From the 200,000 words of notes I have added an additional chapter of 40 pages covering allegations of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor’s predatory sexual behaviour, abuse of his taxpayer-funded role, Sarah Ferguson’s relationships with some of her financial mentors as well as her dealings with Alphabet Capital, and the daughters’ charitable activities. I’m also working on a follow-up book.
Meanwhile, the Yorks’ struggles go on.
Ferguson continues to be in hiding and negotiating some sort of deal either with the media or possibly the Palace to secure her financial future. Though the only people she should really be talking to, as an alleged visitor to Jeffrey Epstein’s properties, are law enforcement on both sides of the Atlantic, the victims’ lawyers and Congress. The daughters yo-yo from being in and out of favour with the Royal Family as they try and work out if they are innocent collateral damage or potentially involved with questionable activities.
Andrew waits to learn his fate as supposedly investigations continue amongst several British police forces. I’m told that he believes that he will not be charged, and I think that is correct. The police made their dawn raid and investigations are ongoing and, I suspect, will be for so long that we will be in a new reign and public anger will have abated before anything is announced.
Already we are being prepared for the fact that he will not receive a fair trial, that a conviction for misconduct in public office will be difficult given he was not a paid public official and it will be difficult to find women to testify to being sex trafficked. That said, I believe there is a strong case for charges to be brought under the Official Secrets Act. Ferguson also has questions to answer over charities.
The Palace do not want their dirty linen washed in public just as they did not during Paul Burrell’s trial in 2002. It’s likely Andrew will want to call his elder brother to testify in his own court, but that will not be allowed to happen. Increasingly hecklers are asking the Royal Family “what did you know and when?” and why did you reach a settlement (reportedly worth £12m) with Virginia Giuffre when she brought a sexual abuse case – though Andrew has always denied the accusations, and he settled the case with no admission of liability. These are questions the royals do not want to answer, but must.
The Yorks’ abuse of their royal position is nothing new. It has been going on for 40 years and appears to have inspired, amongst others, the Sussexes. A blind eye was turned in the hope the news agenda would move on – whether it was Ferguson selling access to Andrew as trade envoy in 2010, or the 2022 High Court case which revealed a payment to Andrew, Ferguson and one of the daughters for £1.3m from a Turkish millionaire which they refused to explain.
However, it has been the Epstein releases, with their cringe-making detail about the couple’s shameless behaviour, and wider calls about royal privilege and accountability that forced King Charles to take action last October. Even then, I believe it has been too little and too late. The scandal should be used to ensure that there is proper transparency in Britain’s most protected institution and the monarchy is fit for purpose in a 21st century democracy.
The relationship between the Crown and the people depends on trust and respect, and that has been broken by the Yorks’ behaviour. The moral authority can be restored, but only if a series of reforms are quickly introduced by both the Palace and the Government.
They include: proper parliamentary oversight. The introduction of a royal register like the ones for MPs which would show the business activities of members such as Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie which was floated 20 years ago. The unsealing of royal wills, which had until the last century been open. The removal of the royal exemption in the Freedom of Information Act which had been part of the initial discussions. The opening of all royal archives to public scrutiny subject to existing exemptions. The Duchies of Lancaster and Cornwall to be brought into public ownership and subject to the same laws as other business organisations, such as revealing tax paid and subject to capital gains and inheritance tax, and so on. The end of King’s and Prince’s consent to shape legislation before it hits the statute book. An audit of Crown Estate properties to ensure market rents are enforced. A full inventory of the Royal Collection Trust and a proper register of royal gifts under whatever auspices they are given.
I also believe there should be a parliamentary enquiry with the former foreign secretaries, heads of UKTI, ambassadors to Central Asian republics, etc – most of whom refused to talk to me – compelled to testify under oath on exactly what happened in the decade Andrew allegedly exploited his public position for private gain. Andrew was enabled by a whole host of politicians, diplomats and civil servants. The Government should be releasing all the files on Andrew’s time as trade envoy so we can see who accompanied him, where he stayed, with whom he did business and they should be answering the parliamentary questions which I know are being asked in both Houses of Parliament by respected politicians.
Only with such reforms can the monarchy flourish, and would the stigma associated with it be corrected. Above all the royal family need to come clean about what they knew about the York activities and what they did about them. If they have nothing to hide, then they have nothing to fear.
