Where it will be 30°C when five-day heatwave hits UK ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

Grey skies and light rain are set to be banished this bank holiday weekend, with parts of the UK forecast to see scorching temperatures as high as 30°C.

From Friday, the UK is forecast for “an exceptional spell of warmth” over five days, according to the Met Office, with temperatures expected to peak on Monday.

Parts of the country are expected to meet the heatwave threshold by Sunday and into next week as southern, central and eastern England and areas of Wales are due to see three or more consecutive days of high temperatures.

Multiple yellow health alerts have been issued due to the heat, with fears there could be “greater risk to the life of vulnerable people”.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has designated the warnings for East Midlands, West Midlands, East of England, London and the South East.

Where will see the higest temperatures?

According to the Met Office, the highest predicted temperature is 30°C in London on Monday.

Soaring temperatures are also forecast as west as Exeter and as north as Nottingham, where the peak temperature is set to be 27°C.

Plenty of other areas will see the mercury hovering around the high 20s, including Cambridge, Reading, Southampton and Brighton.

Met Office Deputy Forecaster Greg Wolverson predicted balmy conditions for much of the country, though Scotland and northern and western England will largely miss out on the hottest conditions.

But, other than the most northerly areas, most will still experience spells of sunshine and temperatures in the mid- to low-20s.

“High pressure will be in charge of the UK’s weather over the bank holiday weekend and this should bring fine and settled conditions to most areas,” Wolverson said.

“The exception will be parts of northwestern Scotland where it will be cooler and cloudier with some rain at times.”

When will the warm weather hit?

The weather is generally warming up throughout this week, but Friday is set to be the first noticeably fine day, with temperatures reaching the high 20s and the clouds clearing.

“There is also a small risk of some thunder in the south late on Friday into Saturday,” Wolverton said.

For the most part, though, Saturday and Sunday are set to be bathed in sunshine, with bank holiday revellers expected to flock to beaches, beauty spots and beer gardens.

Bank holiday Monday will be be a scorcher: the peak temperature of 30°C would blow April’s high of 26.6°C out of the water for hottest day of the year so far.

Into next week, temperatures are expected to remain above normal, feeling very warm at times.

Records could be broken

Tom Morgan, a Met Office meteorologist, highlighted there is a 40 per cent chance temperatures could soar as high as 33°C in southern England on Sunday.

This would, if it happens, make it the warmest May day on record, surpassing 1922’s 32.8°C scorcher in Camden Square, London.

Multiple regions could see heatwaves declared after the weekend, though the threshold varies depending on the area.

Wolverson explained: “Heatwave thresholds – defined as three consecutive days at or above a set temperature – are likely to be reached in parts of the UK from Sunday, most likely in southeastern England.

“Into next week, these conditions are expected to become more widespread, extending across central and western England and into parts of Wales, as temperatures remain well above average.”

This comes after the UK experienced its hottest summer on record in 2025 as vast swathes of England and Wales spent months in drought.

These extreme conditions had lasting effects, as many reservoirs did not return to normal levels until late into the winter and some tree-planting projects reporting devastating losses of up to 40 per cent.

Experts have warned the UK could experience a similarly hot and dry summer this year, as climate scientists predict an El Niño could emerge.

The Pacific weather pattern – which some scientists are branding a ‘super El Niño’ – is expected to arrive as early as this month, supercharging extreme weather events and driving up global temperatures.
