FCS Football Teams With the Best 2-0 Starts, and the Worst 0-2 Starts ...Middle East

News by : (The Analyst) -

The FCS football season comes at you quickly, with plenty of teams 2-0 or 0-2 already. Here are the best and worst of those records, respectively.

The 2026 college football schedule allowed for the FCS to open before FBS counterparts, and some teams have taken the early jump to a really high level.

Other teams are wishing for a do-over.

In a flash, some FCS teams have posted particularly impressive 2-0 starts, while some are 0-2 before they’ve even had a chance shake away the cobwebs.

Here’s a breakdown of the best and worst starts in FCS football:

Best FCS 2-0 Starts

Tarleton State

Wins: 49-30 over Prairie View A&M; 20-13 at Bowling Green

The Texans’ season-opening triumph over the defending SWAC champ drew a Memorial Stadium attendance record (24.481), and they followed up with an FBS win for the second consecutive season. Tylan Hines had 297 scrimmage yards, including 250 on the ground, and defensive back Jadan Aubert forced two fumbles in the win. Often eyed nationally for a rise to the FBS, coach Todd Whitten’s program has unveiled just the right look.

No. 12 Tennessee Tech

Wins: 38-14 vs. Monmouth, 24-9 at Chattanooga

The Golden Eagles have allowed a mere 3.8 yards per pass attempt (57 attempts, 216 yards) in a pair of impressive wins, which mark 17 in a row against FCS teams in the regular season. Quarterback Jax Leatherwood has six touchdown passes.

No. 23 Idaho State

Wins: 38-10 over VMI, 29-17 at Utah State

The Bengals are 2-0 for the first time since 2013 after earning their first FBS win since 2017. The defense had standouts all around against Utah State, including linebacker Nathan Reynolds (17 tackles) and cornerback TreShawn Shorty (two of the unit’s two interceptions).

No. 25 West Florida

Wins: 34-31 vs. Southern Illinois, 42-14 at Central Arkansas

The Argonauts are enjoying one of the strongest starts for any Division II program rising to the FCS. Their win over nationally ranked SIU earned Stats Perform FCS National Team of the Week and their own spot in the Top 25, and they went on the road to claim their United Athletic Conference opener (UCA). Quarterback Ty’ray Davis has accounted for seven touchdowns.

Colgate and No. 10 Lehigh

Lehigh Wins: 35-10 at Holy Cross, 45-14 at Georgetown

Colgate Wins: 24-14 at Fordham, 35-10 vs. Holy Cross

Colgate and Lehigh aren’t just 2-0, they 2-0 in the Patriot League. Colgate both won its season opener and is 2-0 for the first time since the program’s 2018 squad opened 9-0. Lehigh’s Luke Yoder, the reigning PL offensive player of the year, has scored seven touchdowns.

Worst 0-2 Starts

New Hampshire

Losses: 28-14 to UAlbany, 66-3 at Syracuse

While UNH was expected to fall to Syracuse, the defeat was one of the largest in program history. While opening the Sean Goldrich coaching era with the program’s first 0-2 record since 2019, the Wildcats have committed 20 penalties and allowed nine sacks.

West Georgia

Losses: 24-10 vs. Chattanooga, 47-0 at Kennesaw State

Another new coaching era (Steve Englehart) is off to a slow start. Having gone 8-3 last year, the Wolves are averaging just five points, 189.5 yards and 24 minutes, 36 seconds of possession while going a combined 2 of 26 on third- and fourth-down attempts.

Gardner-Webb

Losses: 35-17 at Austin Peay, 17-13 at Wofford

The season has been overshadowed by the firing of first-year coach Kris McCullough after one game following a reported off-field allegation made against him. The Runnin’ Bulldogs are anything but that with just 92 rushing yards (standout running back Carson Gresock has yet to play this season).

Southeastern Louisiana

Losses: 34-28 vs. Houston Christian, 39-14 at South Alabama

The loss to HCU could haunt the Lions’ bid to return to the FCS playoffs if they don’t win the Southland Conference title. They never led against South Alabama and fell to 0-35 against the FBS since returning to football in 2003.
