"I got the idea like, when we were in Monterey and I was just looking at everything around. In October of 1967 Hendrix and his new band, The Jimi Hendrix Experience, were in the studio recording their second album, Axis: Bold as Love. An instrumental version of the song was recorded first, and Hendrix spent a lot of time perfecting the tones for his different guitar tracks. His rhythm guitar he repositioned his pickup selector to create a "hollow" tone, for his lead he fed his signal through a speaker intended for electric organs, and he also added a glockenspiel to create a "straight, dry" tone to underscore everything plus his vocals.
Axis: Bold as Love was released on December 1, 1967, and "Little Wing" has been included on several numerous Hendrix compilation albums. Rolling Stone included "Little Wing" as one of its "500 Greatest Songs of All Time" and several other artists have gone on to record covers including Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughn, and Gil Evans.
