POINT LOMA – A first-time occurrence of any kind is big news at a 101-year-old school and Point Loma High’s boys volleyball team accomplished the feat May 16.

Playing in the San Diego CIF Div. V finals, the Pointers defeated Hoover High 3-0 to win the school’s first volleyball title.

The Pointers entered the playoffs as a No. 4 seed with a first-round bye. Next was a match against No. 5 seed Southwest of El Centro. The Pointers defeated them 3-0 before winning 3-1 in a huge match at No. 1 seed Del Lago Academy, sending them on to the finals against the No. 2-seeded Cardinals.

Both the Pointers and Cardinals had to travel to Oceanside’s MiraCosta Community College, site of the finals. But the Pointers arrived ready for action, led by head coach Ethan Phung and assistant Justin Phung.

The set scores in the final match were 25-19, 25-18 and 25-19, but there were tense moments along the way. The first set was tied at 13 before a Pointer 10-2 run ended the threat.

In the second set, tied at 5, it was a 6-1 run by the Dogs that separated the teams. In the final set it was an 8-1 run that helped defeat the Cardinals and touch off a Pointer celebration.

Grayson Sanicki, a senior, served as the setter for the Pointers’ two top hitters. Waylon Lundeen, a 6-foot-4-inch junior, and Trevor Rutt, a 6-foot-5-inch senior, finished the match with 11 and 10 kills respectively.

With the title win, the Pointers have a six-match winning streak and a 20-12 overall record after finishing 8-2 (second place) in the City Central League behind 10-0 Christian.

The Pointers now move on to the state CIF volleyball playoffs where they are a No. 2 seed in Div. IV. They are scheduled to host No. 7 seed Maywood CES (Center for Enriched Studies). That match takes place on May 19 at 6 p.m.

The winner advances to play the winner of the match between No. 3 Temescal Canyon and No. 6 Birmingham of Lake Balboa on May 21 at 6 p.m. The regional finals are May 23 with the finals set for May 30 at Fresno City College.

Baseball

Also, for the first time, both the baseball and softball teams at Point Loma High have qualified for the Open Division in the CIF playoffs.

The elite Open Division is designed to allow the section’s top eight teams to battle for the honor to be the best of the 92 teams in San Diego and Imperial Counties.

Baseball has the No. 6 seed, following No.1 Cathedral Catholic, No. 2 San Marcos, No. 3 Eastlake, No. 4 Rancho Bernardo, and No. 5 Patrick Henry. After the Pointers at No. 7 and 8 are Granite Hills and Southwest of El Centro.

The Pointers will travel to Eastlake on May 20 for their first game in the double-elimination tournament. The winner plays May 22 against the winner between Granite Hills and San Marcos. All games begin at 4 p.m. unless stated.

Games then are set for May 23 with semifinals May 26 and May 27 (at 4 p.m. if necessary) all at the site of the highest seed, The finals will be played under the lights May 30 at the University of San Diego’s Fowler Field with a 7:30 p.m. start. Tickets must be purchased for games beginning May 26.

The Pointers are two-time defending CIF champions, winning Div. II in 2024 and Div. I in 2025, both under head coach Rigo Ledezma.

Softball

The Pointers made school history last year when they won their first CIF championship in Div. II. This year, under head coach Bill Hunyady, they have risen to the top eight of the 100 softball playing schools in the San Diego Section, earning a No. 2 seed in the Open Division.

This represents a big jump for the Pointer girls. And since all games except the finals are held at the highest-seeded school, they should mostly play in familiar surroundings.

The tournament begins May 19 when Imperial High School makes the drive to challenge the Pointers. The winner takes on the survivor between No. 3 Bonita Vista and No. 6 La Costa Canyon on May 21.

Further rounds are set for May 23, 26 and 27 (at 11 a.m. if necessary) with the finals to be played May 30 at 7 p.m. on the softball field at UC San Diego. Tickets must be purchased for these games.
