A new blood pressure medication has been approved in the U.S., but this one isn’t quite like others that help treat hypertension.
Baxfendy, from pharmaceutical maker AstraZeneca, is the “first and only” FDA-approved medication in the U.S. for adults that directly targets a hormone that increases blood pressure, a release said. According to the drugmaker, the potent aldosterone synthase inhibitor (ASI) is “designed to lower blood pressure in a new way by specifically inhibiting the production of aldosterone,” a hormone that raises blood pressure to unhealthy levels and can increase the risk of heart and kidney problems.
Doctors say they have been waiting for a medication like Baxfendy for “many years.”
“Its novel way of lowering blood pressure has the potential to transform clinical practice by targeting a root cause of persistently uncontrolled hypertension,” Dr. Bryan Williams, Chair of Medicine at University College London, who worked on the drug, said in the release.
Dr. Sadiya Khan, a Cardiologist at Northwestern Medicine, told NBC Chicago the new drug is “really exciting for anyone that has high blood pressure.”
“There aren’t a lot of therapies that can really target that hormone specifically, and this appears to do so in a very effective way with numbers where we were seeing about ten points lower blood pressure in the clinical trials,” Khan said.

Health officials estimate 1.4 billion people worldwide are living with hypertension, with approximately 50% of patients in the U.S. already taking multiple blood pressure medications to try and manage it. In many cases, it remains uncontrolled, leaving patients at significantly higher risk of stroke, heart disease and more.
Hypertension is also often referred to as a “silent killer” because it can damage vital organs long before symptoms appear.
“Over time, this can damage blood vessels and vital organs, increasing the risk of serious health problems such as heart attack, stroke, heart failure and kidney disease,” the release said.
Doctors also encourage a healthy lifestyle to reduce blood pressure, including reducing salt intake, drinking more water, leaning towards a Mediterranean-based diet, increasing exercise and limiting alcohol intake.
“We’re seeing much more data come about, about the potential toxic effects of alcohol,” Khan said. “And really moving away from this narrative of having a glass of red wine as something that is heart healthy, and about minimizing alcohol use for those people with high blood pressure or a risk of heart disease.”
