NEWARK, N.Y. — The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office says one of its deputies is on administrative leave after the office says he fired his gun at a man while responding to an incident at the Newark Police Department Sunday.
According to the sheriff’s office, an intoxicated man entered the lobby of the Newark Police Department just before 5:30 p.m. Sunday. The office says after being asked how he could be helped, he had a pistol and starting complaining about a prior incident he believed Newark Police officers were involved in.
After being asked to put the pistol down, the sheriff’s office says the man then held the gun to his head, then proceeded to leave the station.
An arriving deputy gave several orders to the man to drop the weapon, the sheriff’s office says. The office says the man then pointed the gun at the deputy. The deputy then fired his service gun at the man. The sheriff’s office says the man then complied with the deputy’s orders.
The man was not hit or hurt by bullets, the sheriff’s office says. The office says it was later determined the gun the man had was a BB gun. He was taken into custody and is currently being held under the Mental Hygiene Law at an undisclosed hospital.
The sheriff’s office says the investigation into the man’s actions is ongoing, and criminal charges are pending upon his release from the hospital. The office says it isn’t releasing the man’s name at this time.
The sheriff has directed an administrative review of what happened to determine whether the actions of the deputy were consistent with the office’s policies, procedures, training and applicable law.
The office says the involved deputy has been placed on administrative leave pending the completion of the review.
