A 73-year-old woman from Wilmette and a 21-month -old infant from Lake County were identified as the two people killed in a major car crash in the north suburbs Saturday which left a busy intersection on Route 41 closed for hours as an investigation remains ongoing.
The two-car crash occured about 3:02 p.m. at the intersection of Route 41 and Park Avenue West in Highland Park, officials said. As emergency responders arrived on the scene, they found two heavily damaged cars and multiple victims, two of whom were unconscious and not breathing.
A preliminary investigation revealed a 2026 Hyundai Sonata was traveling northbound on Skokie Valley Road when it struck a 2006 Toyota Sienna that was turning southbound onto Skokie Valley from westbound Park.
The driver of the Toyota, a 73-year-old female, had to be extricated from her vehicle, authorities said. She was transported to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead.
In the Hyundai, a 21-month-old boy, who was in a car seat in the rear passenger of the car, also sustained life-threatening injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital and also pronounced dead.
Preliminary results from autopsies conducted Monday by the Lake County Coroner’s Office showed both died from blunt force injuries as a result of the crash. The woman was identified as 73-year-old Joan Scaccia, of Wilmette, and the 21-month-old infant was identified as Andre Paz of Round Lake, the coroner’s office said.
A third person was also injured in the crash, according to officials. An update on their condition was not provided.
The crash left Route 41 closed for hours, with police asking drivers to avoid the area while they remained on scene. Photos and video from the crash showed heavy damage to both cars, with debris strewn across the road and multiple emergency vehicles onsite.
The Major Crash Assistance Team of Lake County was called to assist in the investigation due to the seriousness of the crash, authorities said. An investigation with MCAT and the Highland Park Police Department remains ongoing.
