The road to the Western Conference Finals for Avalanche goaltender Scott Wedgewood has been an enjoyable journey.
“Fun, honestly, nothing really outside of that, right? You know what’s at stake. It’s obviously a big picture, big moment type, whole story to it,” the 33-year-old netminder said.
“It’s bonus hockey. It’s another game, another day to prepare, another day to come in, show up with the guys. Just this group, and the day-to-day, it’s been so fun. In the sense of games we play within it. We got groups and different apps, we all play different games, and everything’s been cohesive. We all know there’s a big goal, and we want to do it with this group.”

Experience makes a difference in the postseason, and both the Avs and Golden Knights have a plethora of it.
It will be his first start in a conference final. While with the Dallas Stars, he replaced Jake Oettinger in the Game 3 loss of the 2023 Western Conference Finals against Vegas. Oettinger allowed three goals on five shots. Wedgewood came in at 7:10 into the game and made 10 saves on 11 shots.
“When you look around, and you know you got guys that have won and guys can make plays in big moments, feels like maybe it takes a little bit of pressure off that gripping of your stick a little bit tighter …,” Wedgewood said. “We know what we got, but when those guys do talk, they’re even keel. They’re not screaming and panicking and throwing tantrums by any way of the word.”
Avalanche at halfway point to winning the Stanley Cup
The Avalanche swept the Los Angeles Kings in the first round and only lost Game 3 against Minnesota in the second round. While it sounds like a walk in the park, it has been far from it — and there are two more teams to beat before hoisting the Cup.
“You need 16 wins, there’s no real bigger picture than that, right? It could take you 25 games, could take you whatever the math is to lose three in each round. But with 14 potential games remaining, it’s just go and win and do what you can to win each day,” Wedgewood said. “I don’t think there’s really a lot of weight that I put on what game number I played. Body feels good each day. If it has an issue, we try and solve it and go about it that way, but the best part is you want to be here.”

While the road to the WCF has been a grind, Colorado is prepared to face its biggest challenge yet. But it will be somewhat familiar to the President’s Trophy-winning team.
“I would venture to say that Vegas is a little mix of both of our last opponents. They’re a stingy defensive team, have been all year. Analytics near the top of the league in the defending areas, and then they’ve got the firepower. Some dangerous guys, and really good special teams,” head coach Jared Bednar said. “For me, it’s the first two rounds should prepare us well for Vegas, because we’re going to see a little bit of both the teams that we just faced.”
