North Carolina high school state finalist Riley Hagmann has announced her verbal commitment to swim and study at New York University beginning in the fall of 2027. She publicized the news on SwimCloud, writing:
I am so honored to announce my commitment to the Early Decision process at New York University to continue my athletic and academic career! I would like to thank my parents and my sisters for their endless support and sacrifice throughout this journey! I would also like to thank Coach Silver and all of the Marlins of Raleigh for always pushing me to reach and exceed my goals, both in and out of the water. I am so grateful to Coach Trevor Miele for giving me this amazing opportunity! Go Violets!!
A rising senior at Needham Broughton High School in Raleigh, North Carolina, Hagmann has been a member of her school’s varsity swimming team since her freshman year. She also trains year-round with the Marlins of Raleigh, where she primarily specializes in middle-distance freestyle.
Hagmann is coming off a breakthrough 2025-26 season that saw her drop over 21 seconds in the 500 free, more than three seconds in the 200 free, and a tenth and a half in the 100 free. She swam all of her current PBs of 52.85, 1:52.08, and 5:01.12 in the 100, 200, and 500 free at the TAC Titans’ Tar Heel States at the end of March.
At the high school level, Hagmann helped Needham Broughton take fourth in both the 200 and 400 free relays at the North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) 8A State Championships in February, after helping the 400 free relay to eighth as a sophomore. She’s also placed 20th in an off-event, the 100 fly, in each of the past two seasons.

100 Freestyle: 52.85 200 Freestyle: 1:52.08 500 Freestyle: 5:01.12A Division III program, NYU competes in the University Athletic Association against fellow DIII powerhouses Chicago and Emory. The Violet women were the team champions at both the UAA Conference Championships and the NCAA Division III Championships this past season.
Hagmann’s lifetime best in the 500 free would have placed her eighth in the ‘A’ final at the 2026 UAA Conference meet, while her PB in the 200 free is just 0.01 shy of what was needed to make the top eight. Her career best in the 100 free is also just 0.04 outside of what was required to earn a lane in the ‘C’ final.
She’s also within shouting distance of NCAA qualification in her freshman campaign, sitting just behind the 1:51.81 and 4:59.75 needed in the 200 and 500 free to qualify last season.
Hagmann joins Ella Cummins, Maddie Kwok, Sara Yanase, and Bella Zurolo in committing to the Violets’ class of 2031 so far.
