Married at First Sight brides ‘were raped’ prompting Channel 4 to remove episodes ...Middle East

News by : (inews) -

Three women who featured as brides for the hit Channel 4 series Married at First Sight UK have made sexual misconduct allegations against their former on-screen husbands.

Channel 4 has removed all episodes of the series from its broadcast schedule and streaming service after two women claimed they were sexually assaulted and a third said she faced sexual misconduct from their on-screen partners during filming, according to a BBC Panorama investigation.

The men deny all the allegations against them, and both Channel 4 and CPL – the independent production company that makes the series – say their welfare protocols are “robust and comprehensive”.

But the allegations raise major concerns about the safety and welfare of female cast members on the reality show. They will be explored in the documentary The Dark Side of Married at First Sight, which will be shown on Monday at 8pm on BBC One.

The Married at First Sight franchise, which also has hugely popular US and Australian versions, involves couples marrying after meeting for the first time on their wedding day, going on honeymoon together and living together.

Panorama investigated claims that producers left vulnerable participants at risk of harm. Channel 4, which was made aware of the allegations last month, said it had launched a lawyer-led external investigation into the welfare of the show’s contributors and how the channel handled complaints about their experience.

The broadcaster has commissioned a separate external review to produce measures to strengthen the welfare of contributors.

Married At First Sight UK (MAFS UK) will not be shown during those investigations.

A Channel 4 spokesperson said: “While the review is ongoing and until we receive any conclusions and recommendations – and considering Channel 4’s ongoing duty of care to all contributors, the seriousness of the allegations levelled against a small number of past contributors, and out of an abundance of caution to avoid fuelling speculation or jigsaw identification – all previous seasons of MAFS UK have been removed from Channel 4 streaming and linear services at this time, alongside Channel 4’s MAFS UK social channels.”

The broadcaster said that when concerns “related to contributor welfare” were raised, “prompt and appropriate action was taken, based on the information available at the time. Channel 4 strongly refutes any claim to the contrary.”

Lawyers for CPL told the BBC that its welfare system is “gold standard” and industry-leading, and that it acted appropriately in all three cases.

The three women who have accused their onscreen husbands of sexual misconduct were speaking to BBC Panorama presenter Noor Nanji. It is understood that none of the couples are still together.
