Budget season continues for local government, with public budget hearings scheduled this week in Chapel Hill, Carrboro, and Hillsborough – and not one but two public hearings for Chatham County Commissioners, one in Pittsboro and one in Siler City. The city of Durham also has a public budget hearing set for Thursday – but not before city manager Bo Ferguson unveils his proposal, which he’ll do at a City Council meeting this Monday. But this week isn’t entirely budget-focused: the Chapel Hill-Carrboro school board may approve the design for a new elementary school building, while Chatham County Commissioners will reopen public discussion of a major mixed-use development that’s been proposed just north of Pittsboro.
Here’s a rundown of local government meetings this week in Durham, Orange, and Chatham Counties.
Orange County
The Hillsborough Board of Commissioners meets twice this week: Monday, May 18, and Thursday, May 21, both at 7 p.m. Monday’s meeting is budget-focused, with a public hearing followed by a board workshop. Thursday’s session is a joint meeting with the town planning board, to consider reducing the size of the town’s Historic District Commission and allowing Grace Hill Church to expand its facility on Meadowlands Drive. Get links to both agendas here.
Orange County Commissioners also meet twice this week: a regular meeting Tuesday, May 19, followed by a budget work session Thursday, May 21, both at 7 p.m. in the Southern Human Services Center. Tuesday’s agenda includes funding for capital investment and affordable housing; Thursday’s work session will take a deeper dive into the budget requests from the county’s Public Safety and Human Services offices, including Emergency Services, the Sheriff’s Office, and the Orange County Library. The Carrboro Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, with one primary agenda item: a public hearing on town manager Patrice Toney’s budget proposal and five-year capital improvement plan. Council members will also make appointments to various town boards and commissions, and discuss the results of a recent community survey. Click here for the full agenda.
The Chapel Hill Town Council meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday, May 20. This week’s agenda includes a public hearing on town manager Ted Voorhees’ budget proposal for the coming year, plus an update on the town’s Climate Action Plan. Also on the agenda is a public hearing on an incentives package to provide free parking spaces for a business that’s slated to bring 150 jobs downtown. The business has not been publicly identified, so the town is using an eye-catching codename: “PROJECT STARK TOWER.” Click here for a link to the agenda.
The Orange County School Board meets Monday, May 18, at 7 p.m. in the Whitted Building. Click here for the agenda, which includes a work session on the district’s five-year strategic plan, plus a report from the district’s task force on equity.
The Chapel Hill-Carrboro City School Board meets at 6 p.m. Thursday, May 21, with one big agenda item: the board will consider approving a schematic design for a new Carrboro Elementary School building. Click here for a link to the full agenda.
Chatham and Durham Counties
Chatham County Commissioners have a busy week planned, with not one but four scheduled meetings. Their regular meeting is Monday, May 18, with an agenda that includes a public hearing on next year’s budget and a continued public hearing on the “Fearrington Preserve,” a proposed 372-acre mixed-use development off Andrews Store Road north of Pittsboro that would include 630 for-sale residential units. The rest of the week is explicitly budget-focused, with a second public hearing in the Siler City Courtroom at 6 p.m. Tuesday, May 19, followed by budget workshops on Thursday and Friday, May 21-22. Get a link to the full agendas here.
And the Durham City Council meets twice this week: Monday, May 18, and Thursday, May 21, both at 1 p.m. City manager Bo Ferguson will present his budget proposal and five-year capital improvement plan at Monday’s meeting; then the board will hold a public hearing on that plan on Thursday.
