South Carolina is trying to rebound from a disastrous 2025 season that saw the Gamecocks limp to a 4-8 record and only manage 1 SEC victory.
That quest for a bounce-back campaign in 2026 was boosted on Saturday afternoon with the commitment of Stetson offensive tackle transfer Vincent Chen. The agency for the 6-foot-8, 330-pounder told CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz and Chris Hummer, as well as Hale McGranahan, who covers South Carolina for 247Sports, about Chen’s intentions to head to the SEC to showcase his skills this fall.
Gamecocks head coach Shane Beamer now has reinforcements coming along his offensive line by way of a very unlikely program from a very unlikely conference. Stetson is an FCS program that competes in the Pioneer Football League, so Chen will be making quite a big jump this season in trying to succeed in the SEC.
Despite being from an FCS program, Chen was showered with a lot of interest from Power 4 programs, with South Carolina being the chosen one. Chen appeared in all 12 games for Stetson last season, thriving for the Hatters. He’s a former All-Pioneer Football League honorable mention selection, so the Gamecocks could be getting a diamond in the rough in Chen.

— Matt Zenitz (@mzenitz) May 16, 2026Chen spent 2 seasons at Stetson, including last fall when he starred for the Hatters as a sophomore after being limited to 5 games as a freshman during the 2024 season. Despite that limited action 2 years ago, he was still an honorable mention all-conference performer.
South Carolina is getting a total athlete in Chen, a DeLand, Fla., product who competed in track and weightlifting during his high school years in addition to playing football. Chen also has shown leadership skills, being named a captain during his senior season of high school.
The Gamecocks have been busy this offseason with the transfer portal, with Chen becoming the 27th transfer commitment for South Carolina, so the 2026 roster will feature a ton of turnover as Beamer tries to turn things around in Columbia.
South Carolina will be trying to regain some relevance in the SEC this fall under Beamer, and Chen’s presence will surely help the Gamecocks toward that.
