MONROE COUNTY, N.Y. — People across the area continue to feel the pain at the pump as gas prices continue to soar.
AAA puts the average in Monroe County at around $4.59 a gallon. To help out, President Donald Trump has floated the idea of temporarily suspending the federal gas tax.
New York Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand spoke on gas prices in Western New York on Friday. She blamed the president for the high prices after getting the U.S. into the war with Iran.
However, Gillibrand said she agrees with the president that now is the time to give regular people a break.
“During regular times, that money pays to pave our streets and to keep our transportation safe, so it’s not a bad investment,” Gillibrand said. “But in these times of economic distress, I think we should withhold the gas tax.”
The federal gas tax is a little more than 18 cents a gallon. Suspending it would require an act of Congress and lose the federal government around half a billion dollars a week.
