Spoilers ahead for WONDERfools season 1.
WONDERfools ending explained: What happened to the Child of Eternity?
20 years earlier, Dr Ha Won-do conducted illegal human experiments on dozens of children in an attempt to create immortality. The children were exposed to chemicals and repeatedly tested inside a hidden facility connected to what would later become the Church of Eternal Salvation Prayer Hous.
One child in particular became the centre of the experiments: the so-called Child of Eternity. Unlike the others, the child could repeatedly die and regenerate.
Un-jeong, who was also one of the children trapped there, witnessed the experiments firsthand.
What are the Wunderkinder?
The Wunderkinder are the surviving children from Won-do’s experiments.
Using their abilities, the Wunderkinder manipulated followers into believing they were witnessing miracles.

Is the Child of Eternity still alive?
Technically, yes — but not in the way many characters initially believed.
After the original laboratory incident, the Child of Eternity suffered catastrophic brain damage when debris crushed part of the skull during the fire.
Madam King, Chae-ni's grandma, and the remaining researchers then made a horrifying decision: the Child of Eternity’s heart was transplanted into young Chae-ni, who suffered from a severe heart condition.
This is also why Un-jeong becomes emotionally attached to Chae-ni after recognising similarities between her and the child he once tried to protect.
How did Chae-ni and her friends get powers?
After falling into the polluted water, Chae-ni unexpectedly returns to life. The same contamination also affects Son Gyeong-hun and Kang Ro-bin after they fall into the reservoir.
Soon afterwards, all three begin developing abilities.
Ro-bin develops immense strength and near invulnerability whenever his emotions intensify. Gyeong-hun gains adhesive abilities that allow him to stick himself to surfaces.
Madam King is far more connected to the experiments than Chae-ni initially realises. The finale confirms that Madam King financially supported Won-do’s research project 20 years earlier.
After the laboratory incident, Madam King also helped rescue surviving children from the facility. However, characters like Ho-ran accuse her of abandoning the children who displayed powers while only protecting those who appeared normal.
What was Dr Ha Won-do’s real plan?
The finale confirms that Won-do’s ambitions were never limited to simply recovering the Heart of Eternity from Chae-ni. During his confrontation with Un-jeong inside the underground laboratory, Won-do finally explains the true purpose behind the experiments.
According to Won-do, the original experiments were an attempt to create immortality. However, he eventually decided that humanity itself needed to evolve. His final plan involved spreading phenol throughout Haeseong city during the New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Won-do believed that this would create a new species and a new world. In addition to likely finding more people with the heart of eternity. The Church of Eternal Salvation Prayer House was ultimately a way for him to gather money, followers and test subjects while preparing for that plan.
What happens to Ha Won-do’s children?
Pal-ho dies first after the side effects caused by the experiments spread throughout his body. By the end, his skin begins hardening into a stone-like state before he collapses and dies.
Ju-ran becomes consumed by revenge after losing both Pal-ho and Won-do during the same night. Using her psychic manipulation abilities, she controls civilians, police officers and even Un-jeong himself in an attempt to finish Won-do’s plan.
Although Ho-ran, now in her normal appearance, is seriously injured, Un-jeong later confirms that she still has a pulse before they call an ambulance. She does not appear again after that.
After learning that Won-do plans to spread phenol across Haeseong city, Chae-ni, Un-jeong, Ro-bin and Gyeong-hun split up during the New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Gyeong-hun clings to the side of the aircraft using his adhesive abilities while Chae-ni climbs aboard. Once the airship begins exploding, Chae-ni teleports both herself and the aircraft away from Haeseong before the phenol can spread across the city.
Is Chae-ni dead?
No. Although the finale initially makes it appear as though Chae-ni died while teleporting the exploding airship, she eventually returns alive.
Madam King immediately recognises her, and the emotional reunion confirms that Chae-ni survived.
Un-jeong later arrives and hugs her as the four friends are finally reunited after saving the city.
What happens in the post-credits scene of WONDERfools?
After the battle in Haeseong-si, Un-jeong finally reunites with his mother and returns to working at the City Hall Complaint Office.
However, deep beneath the destroyed underground laboratory, Dr Ha Won-do’s body is shown beginning to regenerate.
