Emma Raducanu has appointed Andrew Richardson as her new coach, rekindling the partnership which propelled her to a historic US Open title five years ago.
The 52-year-old was sacked just a few weeks after his charge won her maiden grand slam title in New York, but that relationship appears to have been rebuilt last month.
Raducanu, 23, trained with Richardson at the Ferrer Tennis Academy (ATF) in Spain last month, and struck a deal earlier this week to bring him on tour with her for the French Open, Wimbledon and beyond.
“Grateful to have reconnected with someone who has known me for over a decade now and looking forward to building together one iteration at a time,” Raducanu said.

The British No 1’s preparations for Roland Garros have been severely hampered by post-viral symptoms, the aftershock from an illness she picked up during a tournament in Romania in February.
She struggled on and tried to “play through the pain” in Dubai, Doha and finally Indian Wells, where a heavy defeat to Amanda Anisimova – she won just two games – would be her last match for two months as she tried to give her body time to recover.
Raducanu was due to return at the Masters event in Rome this week but made a last-minute decision to pull out after training in the Italian capital for several days. She subsequently linked up with Richardson again in Strasbourg, the Brit having stepped down from his job as head coach to become sports advisor at the ATF to allow him to work with Raducanu.
He will join a team that also includes hitting partner Alexis Canter, physio Emma Stewart, former player and family friend Jane O’Donoghue, and Jerome Poupel, a chiropractor who has worked with Raducanu on a chronic back issue.
A safe pair of hands
Richardson wanted to stay on but was dispensed with after winning in New York (Photo: Getty)When Raducanu parted ways with Richardson, who was also a childhood coach of hers, back in 2021, she cited the need for “someone who’s had that professional tour experience”. She had jumped from from 361 in the word to No 22 and was all of a sudden facing top pros with years of nous over her.
But his sudden departure just weeks after the US Open victory was to become a theme of Raducanu’s first five years on tour, and his return signals the 10th appointment she has made in her professional career.
Richardson always maintained he wanted to continue working with Raducanu in 2021, although his exit was dogged by a persistent rumour that he wanted to coach his son Rocco, who has now earned a place as a Division One college player at Baylor University in the USA.
“I had a nine-week trial contract that both Emma and I thought was a good idea to see how we would get on, and it ran through to the end of the US Open, stopping immediately afterwards,” he told the Daily Mail in 2023.
“‘”There was a period of time after that when I was keen to renegotiate the contract. I wanted to carry on, and I had a plan that I wanted to put in place for Emma. This thing about ‘I wanted to go off and coach my son’ is not true, but it seems to come up all the time.”
