Gautam Gambhir has led to several failures in the longest format of the game. In the past two years under Gambhir's coaching, India has faced whitewashes at home against New Zealand in 2024 and against South Africa in 2025. The only ray of hope is the tied series between India and England in 2025.
Former Indian coach Rahul Dravid believes that the no-superstar policy of current coach Gautam Gambhir does not hold any importance for him, as he believes that every team and every sport needs its heroes. He said that individual success can lead to their team's glory.
"There’s a lot of scrutiny and constant focus on you. So to become a legend or a superstar in India means you’ve done a lot of things right, and in the process, you’ve also helped your team win,” Dravid told Wisden on the Scoop podcast.
"It is not easy to replace players like that" : Rahul Dravid opines on retiring Indian legends
“The passion to do well in red-ball cricket is definitely there. We’ve had a couple of series where we haven’t performed as well as an Indian team, and that can happen. We are also missing a few key players, with some of the big names having recently retired—Rohit, Virat, and Ashwin—and it is not easy to replace players like that," said Dravid.

The Indian great also claimed that situations have changed from his time to modern times. He claimed that though this current generation also gives equal significance to Test cricket, they have struggled to maintain their form due to the increasing volume of cricket.
"Many of these players today are having to juggle multiple formats, and it is not always easy because they may not get as much time to prepare for red-ball cricket as my generation did," he said on Indian cricketers struggling to maintain form across the formats.
