CSK do not have another overseas player in the squad who offers the same package. Even as an Indian, Ramakrishna Ghosh could’ve easily played but even he has been ruled out.
The franchise has signed South African all-rounder Dian Forrester as a replacement, but he is unavailable for the LSG game. That means CSK will likely pick either Spencer Johnson or Matt Henry in the XI.
Johnson appears the more likely option because of his left-arm angle and ability to bowl at the death. Matt Henry struggled earlier in the tournament, leaking 13.00 runs per over in 3 games. One of the positives for Chennai has been the rise of Urvil Patel. Retained after a decent cameo-filled 2025 season, Urvil has exploded this year after a slow first game. His scores of 24 off 12, 17 off 9 and then 65 off 23 against LSG have locked down the No. 3 spot.
Urvil became the first batter in the tournament’s history to hit six sixes within the first eight balls of an innings as CSK stormed to a massive powerplay total during their chase.
That knock against Lucknow completely changed the game. Urvil smashed eight sixes and two boundaries to help CSK complete their first successful 200-plus chase since 2018. His strike rate in men’s T20 cricket since 2024 is now 232.43, the highest among Indian batters with a minimum of 500 runs.
MS Dhoni still unavailable for CSK
MS Dhoni has still not recovered enough to return. The 44-year-old has not travelled with the CSK squad to Lucknow and remains unavailable because of the calf strain he suffered before IPL 2026. While there were hopes of a return later in the season, CSK have continued with Sanju Samson as wicketkeeper in Dhoni’s absence.
Dhoni missing the entire season has left a lot to be desired among fans. Samson has handled the gloves well, but Dhoni’s finishing ability and mind behind the stumps in crunch situations are obviously impossible to replicate. Fans eagerly wait for Dhoni’s return.
