Some of the top swimmers from the east coast are competing at Richmond Super Sectionals this week. Highlighting night 1 was 33 year old Chuck Katis who won the men’s 100 breaststroke in a 1:04.89. Katis was a 1:02.65 at the end of last summer, which was his first long course season return to competition since 2019.

Also swimming to a win on the boys side was 16 year old Justin Shi who dropped 2.11 seconds en route to a win in the 200 IM as he swam to a 2:03.19. That moves him all the way up in the 15-16 top 100 age group to sit at #26 as his previous best sat at #90. He won the event by over two seconds. He has dropped five seconds in the last year as he was a 2:08.39 back in May 2025.

Doug Sims dropped 0.63 seconds in his win in the 100 free, touching in a 51.76. Sims, an Emory commit, had a strong short course season in the event this past winter. Northwestern commit Spencer Belbot was 2nd in a 52.02. Also earning a win on the boys side was Virginia Tech’s Andy Roose who swam to a 25.99 in the 50 back. Roose just finished his freshman season with the Hokies, swimming at NCAAs with a lifetime best 46.07 100 back for 41st as well as a 1:39.83 200 back for 21st.

The girls side of the night was highlighted by 100 breast as the event came down to the final touch as Jenny Hofer dropped 0.04 seconds and earned the win in a 1:13.64 to touch just ahead of Ava Jochims who was 2nd in a 1:13.79. That was Jochims’ 2nd swim of the session as she also swam a 2:20.06 for 2nd in the 200 IM. Sofie Vanyo won the 200 IM in a 2:19.18.

16 year old Samantha Roemer won the 100 free in a 57.32, dropping 0.69 seconds in the process. She has dropped over a second in the last year as she swam a 58.54 at this meet a year ago. The #13 ranked recruit in the girls high school class of 2026 Virginia Hinds swam to a win in the 50 back as she swam a 29.27, dropping a tenth off her previous lifetime best.
