The Numbers Behind the Ben Johnson Effect Are Astounding ...Middle East

Sport by : (Bleacher Nation) -

Ben Johnson is one of the 10 best coaches in the NFL.

If you don’t believe me, then that’s fine. That is your prerogative. However, perhaps you would believe it if it came from NFL analysts such as Mina Kimes and Sheil Kapadia. Both have Johnson comfortably in their top 10. The dicussion in the most recent episode of Kimes’ podcast is fascinating. You can check it out in its entirety here, but I strongly recommend you check out tthe clip below:

More from Mina Kimes and Sheil Kapadia:

KIMES: “I think he is the real deal. What an absolute home run hire for Chicago. That offense went from 26th in EPA per play, 27th in DVOA, to 7th and 9th. His immediate impact on this team was so obvious. … Sometimes, we talk about coaches ‘What do you do here?’ We saw immediately. This dude was a genius in Detroit, and he is still a genius. And he brought everything they hoped for to the Chicago Bears.

KAPADIA: “I felt comfortable putting him at four, because to me, it wasn’t just about last year and what he did. I’m looking at Detroit, and what he did, and what they’ve looked like offensively since he’s been gone. OK, it’s a longer résumé than just last year with the Bears for him. He’s got the goods offensively, I think we can all agree. He’s arrogant, he’s a little nuts, he’s a guy you love rooting for if you’re a Bears fan, and if you’re anyone else, you’re like, “Get this guy off my screen.’ He’s millennial Sean Payton.

Those are some pretty eye-opening statements that are dropped in that clip above. And to think, there is more throughout the pod. They’ve got Ben Johnson as the NFL’s fourth-best coach, the third-best in the conference, and the top dog in the division. And hearing that “Matt LaFleur had a year to forget” (h/t to my buddy Adam for snagging that one) is something that will help me sleep better at night. The Bears got a good one. It’s about dang time.

Believe It: Ben Johnson is one of the NFL’s 10 Best Coaches

We knew the Bears offense was better in 2025 than it was in 2024. You don’t need the traditional numbers or advanced metrics to have seen the change. But still … the analytics put into perspective how much better Chicago’s offense was with Ben Johnson calling the shots. And sometimes, you just need to see it put in that way in order to really let it sink in.

The move from 26th to seventh in EPA per play and the jump from 27th to ninth in DVOA is mind-blowing. Those aren’t examples of incrimental improvement. Instead, those are massive moves in a positive direction. That isn’t the type of movement Bears fans are used to seeing from their offense. Frankly, as someone who has been watching this team forever, having an offense like this is somethign that is long overdue.

WHAT WE KNOW ABOUT THE 2026 CHICAGO BEARS SCHEDULE

This is what the Ben Johnson effect looks like. It isn’t just saying stuff. It’s doing the stuff that you said you’d do. It isn’t just demanding excellence from players. It is following up with them to make sure they know their roles. It isn’t just the rah-rah “Good, Better, Best!” pep talk after a win. It is connecting to the players so that they want to do everything they can to do it all again next week. It isn’t just gadget plays or offensive wizardry. It is putting in the necessary work in getting the little things right that light the path to doing the cool stuff that makes highlight reels at the end of the year.

Yes, all of those things I mentioned above are part of the Ben Johnson experience. But at the core of it all is the desire to be the best and following through with actions that will help you reach your goals. Speak excellence into existence, then work on it so it can become a reality.

Over the years, I’ve lost track of how many coaches talked a big game but didn’t back it up. But in Year 1 under Ben Johnson, the Bears put Johnson’s plan into motion with actions that backed the coach’s words. It was refreshing to watch and I hope it continues moving forward.
