It had been 63 days since San Diego FC last tasted victory at home and 67 days since the club won a MLS match. That agony came to an end Wednesday when SDFC demolished Austin FC 5-0 at Snapdragon Stadium.
The team got a brace from midfielder David Vazquez, who scored goals in the eighth and 91st minute while making his fourth-straight appearance as a starter.
Forwards Anders Dreyer and Marcus Ingvartsen and midfielder Pedro Soma all contributed goals of their own to run away with the match as goalkeeper Duran Ferree had another stellar performance, coming up with big saves the few times that Austin (3-5-5) created clear scoring chances.
“I think we were clean on the ball and, at the same time, vertical with it,” said SDFC head coach Mikey Varas. “It was a good balance between having strong possessions and controlling the match. I also think that we got back to winning duels, traveling together, having that energy that you need play after play to give yourselves the best chance of winning a game.”
San Diego FC (4-5-4) came in to the match having endured three straight contests that ended with a painful draw or defeat. At home on April 25, a goal in the 96th minute gave Portland a 2-1 victory and prompted frustrated fans to chant “El Chucky Lozano” after the final whistle, referring to the sidelined star.
SDFC then saw a home win turn into a tie on May 2 against LAFC after giving up a two-goal lead, including a shot in the 14th minute of second-half added time. Last weekend, in a 1-1 draw with the Seattle Sounders, the club surrendered a goal in the 80th minute and missed a clear scoring opportunity from Ingvartsen in front of the goal in the final seconds.
“I think Marcus (Ingvartsen) is really stepping up in terms of finding ways to score goals and being a real impact at the number nine position,” Varas added. “I think Anders Dreyer continues to be a massive player for us. He’s involved in everything that happens when we are flowing in our possession.”
Before Wednesday, SDFC last won at home on March 11, defeating Toluca FC 3-2 in the Concacaf Champions Cup. The club beat Sporting KC 1-0 on the road on March 7.
San Diego FC now has 16 points and in 10th place in the Western Conference standings thanks to a better goal differential than LA Galaxy. The team has two more upcoming home games, Saturday against Cincinnati FC, then May 23 against the Vancouver Whitecaps.
