HOPEWELL, N.Y. — Ontario County Public Health (OCPH) said it’s investigating a possible case of locally-acquired hantavirus. OCPH says there’s no connection to the current cruise ship infections, and no risk to the general public.
Symptoms range from mild to severe, with the virus being transmitted via mice and rodent droppings, infected urine, feces, and saliva. Chores such as cleaning, washing, sweeping, and vacuuming can lead to exposure to humans.
OCPH asks people to wear masks, gloves, and other protective measures when cleaning attics, cabins, and sheds this spring. Washing hands and clothing after can also help prevent infection.
“It is not the department’s usual practice to provide a press release in this scenario, but with the current cruise ship outbreak, the influence of social media, and perceived public anxiety, I feel it is prudent to address the current investigation and reassure the community,” said Kate Ott, public health director.
Human hantavirus infections are uncommon, with only a few cases since reporting became mandatory in 1995.
