Overnight, a 30-game marathon becomes a 3-game sprint.
Much of the postseason picture is filled in for the hardball squads of the SEC. But there’s plenty to play for in the final weekend of the regular season, just as there’ll be plenty on the line in Hoover next week.
After a week full of social media feedback, (hello there, Arkansas fans, I hear you!), here’s where the squads of the SEC stack up, heading toward the finish line.
16. Mizzou (23-27 overall, 6-21 in SEC)
A winning series over Vanderbilt was a positive moment for a season lacking many positive moments. Texas is a brutal end to the road for the Tigers.
15. South Carolina (22-31, 7-20)
A sweep from Alabama leaves the Gamecocks in jeopardy of plunging to last. They could find the going a little easier at Vandy this week.
14. LSU (29-24, 9-18)
Georgia didn’t do any favors to LSU and Florida probably won’t either. While a repeat was always going to be a tall ask for this Tigers team, this kind of struggle is genuinely shocking.
13. Vanderbilt (29-24, 11-16)
In dire need of a series win against the weakest team in the league, Vandy instead likely drove the final nail in its NCAA Tournament coffin. The Commodores sit at No. 74 in the NCAA RPI rankings, and regardless of the final weekend against South Carolina, aren’t going anywhere.
12. Kentucky (30-18, 12-15)
Kentucky did grab 1 win over Florida, but still has some work to do. Another win against Arkansas should cement the NCAA case, whereas a Razorback sweep suddenly makes Hoover awfully important for UK.
11. Oklahoma (31-18, 13-14)
OU has dropped its last 3 series matchups after losing to Arkansas. The Sooners are definitely making the NCAA Tournament, but could badly use some positive momentum from their regular-season finale at home against Tennessee.
10. Tennessee (35-18, 13-14)
UT was probably in the NCAA picture safely anyway, but a series win over Texas makes that absolutely certain. The series with Oklahoma now matters mostly for seeding in Hoover.
9. Ole Miss (35-18, 14-13)
The Rebels did best Texas A&M, but had lost their previous 2 series matchups. A battle at Alabama could have genuine NCAA Regional hosting implications for Ole Miss.
8. Arkansas (34-18, 15-12)
So yes, ranking Arkansas 10th last week was not a popular choice. In all fairness, somebody had to be 10th… but yes, the Hogs had just beaten Ole Miss head-to-head, so after a series win against Oklahoma (which is 3 straight series wins), here they are. And yes, before I hear from Razorback Nation about this rank not being higher, that No. 27 RPI isn’t great.
7. Florida (34-18, 15-12)
The Gators have won their last 2 series matchups and finish with a hopeless LSU team while Arkansas battles a hungry Kentucky squad looking to finalize its NCAA ticket. Edge to the Gators, at least for this week.
6. Mississippi State (38-14, 15-12)
Another 15-12 team. The Bulldogs have dropped their last 2 series matchups, but a strong RPI case leaves this weekend’s series at Texas A&M likely to determine a top 8 spot. Still, a shot of positive momentum would certainly help the Bulldogs.
5. Alabama (35-17, 16-11)
A helpful schedule leaves Alabama with 6 straight SEC wins. Ole Miss figures to be a tougher opponent to finish. While Alabama is likely going to be an NCAA Regional host, another series win would certainly help with a top 8 spot (and the potential Super Regional hosting nod).
4. Texas A&M (37-12, 16-10)
The Aggies have dropped their last 2 series battles, with a pair of 1-run losses and a 2-run loss in that group. The Aggies’ pitching staff could use a statement performance this weekend at home against Mississippi State.
Who will win it all in Omaha this year? Here’s the latest market from Kalshi:

Despite a mid-week loss to Jacksonville State, the Tigers are red-hot. Winning 4 straight series matchups over top 10 ranked opponents is mammoth. So is Auburn’s impressive pitching depth (3.48 team ERA). This weekend’s battle with Georgia should be a nice test of that brilliant pitching staff.
2. Texas (37-12, 16-10)
The Horns dropped a series to Tennessee, but will have an easy landing against Missouri. So why so high on Texas? Whoever faces the Horns will have to figure out a way to beat Dylan Volantis — and good luck there. Auburn’s staff is a bit deeper, but Texas’s is almost as good — and the bats are more consistent for the Horns.
1.Georgia (41-11, 21-6)
Obviously, it’s a scary offense with the 140 homers and likely SEC triple-crown bound Daniel Jackson. Can the pitching hold up its end of the bargain? Postseason baseball is likely to force the Bulldogs to find out… but until they’re challenged, they’ve earned the spot at No. 1 — and should get a great Hoover tune-up against Auburn.
