Tehran declares ‘strategic control’ over the Strait of Hormuz ...Egypt

News by : (EGYPT INDEPENDENT) -

Amid the rapidly escalating developments in the US-Iranian conflict, Tehran is tightening its grip on the Strait of Hormuz.

Iranian media quoted the spokesperson for the Iranian military, Mohammad Akraminia, as saying: “The Strait of Hormuz is under the strategic control of the Iranian armed forces. The western part of the strait is under the control of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy, while the eastern part is under the control of the regular army navy.”

“This coordinated and integrated control, along with strengthening Iran’s monitoring and sovereignty over the region, will generate revenues for the country that are double its oil revenues,” he said.

Akraminia continued: “We will no longer allow US weapons to pass through the Strait of Hormuz to reach bases in the region. Anyone wishing to transit the strait must be subject to the supervision of the Iranian armed forces.”

America’s demands are a ‘significant obstacle’

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi described America’s “excessive demands, threatening and provocative rhetoric, lack of good faith, and lack of credibility” as “the most significant obstacles to ending the war and reaching a potential agreement,” Iranian media reported.

During his meeting in Tehran with the Norwegian Deputy Foreign Minister, Araqchi said that “the primary reason for the current situation in the Strait of Hormuz is the American and Zionist (Israeli) military aggression against Iran, followed by repeated violations of the ceasefire, along with the continued blockade imposed on Iranian ports.”

Araqchi explained that “Iran, as the coastal state of the Strait of Hormuz, is conducting consultations to establish regulations concerning arrangements for the Strait of Hormuz in accordance with international law.”

Iranian threats

The Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy’s Deputy Commander for Cultural Affairs and Psychological Warfare, Saeed Siah Sarani stressed Iran will never allow the passage of oil tankers through the Strait of Hormuz without permission.

He added, “If America and US President Donald Trump personally want to make a mistake, we will turn the Gulf into the largest watery graveyard for US Marines.”

This comes after an Iranian delegation, headed by the Director General of the International Legal Department at the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Abbas Bagherpour, met with a delegation from the Sultanate of Oman in Muscat.

The Iranian news agency IRNA reported on Tuesday that the meeting addressed the latest developments concerning the Strait of Hormuz and arrangements for the safe passage of ships through this waterway.

Both sides affirmed their sovereign rights and jurisdictions in the Strait of Hormuz, as part of the territorial waters of both Iran and the Sultanate of Oman, according to IRNA.

The Iranian delegation also met with Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi, as well as the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization, Arsenio Dominguez, who is visiting Oman.

Trump in China

US President Donald Trump arrived in China on Wednesday for a summit described as “important” with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping.

Trump reiterated his commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons, stating before departing the United States that “Iran must either reach a good agreement with America or face destruction.”
