Alabama softball advanced through the SEC Tournament to the championship game on Saturday, where the Crimson Tide fell to Texas 7-1, just weeks after dethroning the Longhorns from its No. 1 spot.
Game one: Alabama 7, Arkansas 1
Alabama opened up the SEC Tournament strong, winning 7-1 over No. 7 seed Arkansas on Thursday.
Neither team was able to find any luck on the mound throughout the first three innings, both remaining scoreless.
However, Arkansas broke its runless spell in the fourth to put its first and only run of the day on the board after a wild pitch brought in a player from third.
This seemingly awoke Alabama, which responded with a run of its own, a home run from outfielder Audrey Vandagriff.
In the fifth, infielder Brooke Wells added a two-run home run of her own to Alabama’s tally. Utility player Alexis Pupillo then followed Wells’ performance with a solo home run.
Wells now has sole ownership of third place for the single most home runs in a season, with a personal record of 22. She is now three away from second place and just four away from first place.
Infielder Ambrey Taylor joined in on the home run fun in the sixth, adding another solo home run to the board. For her second run of the day, Wells brought in outfielder Kristen White with an RBI single.
Following a fielding error, pinch runner Gerritt Griggs brought in Alabama’s final run of the day, ending the game 7-1 and advancing the Crimson Tide to the semifinals.
“It says a lot about the strength of our conference when Arkansas finishes as the No. 7 seed and is also No. 1 in the RPI,” head coach Patrick Murphy said. “We’re just glad to get a win and get another opportunity tomorrow to play a really good team in this kind of environment.”
Game two: Alabama 9, Florida 1
Coming off a strong opening game, Alabama continued its momentum, run-ruling No. 3 seed Florida 9-1 on Friday to advance to the championship. This is Alabama’s 16th run rule of the season, and its first at the SEC tournament since 2012.
With both teams going through the first inning runless, Alabama looked to get on the board first in the second. Taylor accomplished this with a solo home run, kicking off a four-run streak for the Crimson Tide.
Outfielder Ana Roman advanced Alabama 2-0 after an RBI single into right field. Catcher Marlie Giles followed her up with a bases-loaded single that brought in two, putting Alabama ahead 4-0 going into the third.
Florida scored its only run in the third with an RBI groundout. Alabama was able to produce two more runs in the third, setting the Crimson Tide a solid 6-1 ahead. The first came from White, who scored from first after a double from Jena Young and a Florida error. Pupillo brought in the second with a single up the middle that brought home Young.
Alabama ended the game in the fifth, after a scoreless fourth, adding three more runs to its tally. Pupillo kicked off the scoring in the fifth with an RBI double before Vandagriff brought in an RBI double of her own. Taylor then ended the game 9-1 with an RBI single.
Game three: Texas 7, Alabama 1
After two strong games, Alabama was unable to pull off a championship win against No. 4 seed Texas, falling 7-1. The Crimson Tide previously faced Texas in the regular season and had pulled off a striking defeat against the then No. 1 ranked Longhorns.
This was the first time the two faced each other in the SEC Championship, and Texas had learned its lesson from just over a month ago.
Alabama was able to get on the board first after Pupillo slammed a home run to right field. After the first, the Crimson Tide was unable to find such luck again, remaining runless for the other six innings.
Texas immediately struck back in the second with two runs of its own, and didn’t stop there, remaining in the lead the rest of the game.
This marks Alabama’s 10th SEC Championship appearance, which is tied for second for the most of any team.
Alabama softball will return to action in the NCAA tournament, hosting Southeast Louisiana, Belmont and USC Upstate in the Tuscaloosa regional as the No. 1 overall seed.
